This thread is for comments on the article "Alaskans and climbers "atwitter" over Palin climbing nonexistent peak"

Usually we steer far, far away from politics, but like Governor Mark Sanford "hiking the Appalachian Trail" in 2009, this one touches the outdoor world. It seems many Alaskans and climbers are all (ahem) atwitter over former Governor Sarah Palin's following July 14th tweet: The trouble is, there is no Sweettooth on Denali. Sugar Tooth Mountain on the Ruth Glacier does have a pinnacle called Swee...

I will second the motion and say I could care less.

I knew there was a show in the works, but I didn't know what about.

I'm a dedicated republican all the way but Palin seems to me to be an air-head. She just got some peaks confused? Maybe just shows you what all that cold can do. Just do not know. I do know that she is a laughing stock and will leave it there.

It just smells a little bit like "Oh, look how dumb Sarah Palin is, she can't even get the name of a mountain right". Like none of us have ever spelled something wrong, mispronounced a word or forgotten a name. If she had gotten the name of the peak right would it have been newsworthy? If it was Hillary Clinton or Condoleeza Rice would it have been newsworthy?

I'm not a fan or detractor of hers, the woman has accomplished way more than her detractors have but she isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread, either. I guess I should feel lucky that it took just a little bit of attention away from Lindsay Lohan being in jail (yawn!) or Lebron going to Miami (snzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz) or any of the other non events broadcast as news these days. And she does piss off most of the cranks on The View! :)

Wait for the spin to start... I could care less what she (or any public bobble-head) does.

What else is going on? OH YEAH! 16 people are alive in the Tetons thanks to the dedication and bravery of rescue crews.

http://www.trailspace.com/blog/2010/07/22/grand-teton-lightning-rescue.html

Now, that is news-worthy.

On with life... nothing to see here.

I agree that it's a bit of a Rorschach test. One's reaction says more about one's own existing opinion than much else.

Who knows, maybe Palin is a good climber or has the makings of one. I'll reserve judgment in the absence of more info (I'm taking my own advice here).

Don't fret, anyone. Trailspace has no plans to become a celebrity gossip "news" site. However, if some of those celebrities/famous people make news for themselves recreating in the backcountry, we might give them the occasional attention.

(Except for Lindsay Lohan. We will not be a party to that media insanity, even if she free solos her way out of jail and goes on to hike every long distance trail in the country.)

Now, as Cleric said, I'll move along to better backcountry topics and news.

If she actually did that? I would offer all the power in the world to her. People really screw up. I sure have. Who are we as folks if we do not offer some love to those who try?

No argument. There are just many ways to look at life and all that happens.

Frankly a thru-hike is just what she needs. Not that people in that situation are ever aware of what they really need, much less able to act on it.

You're right. People screw up and should be allowed to move on.

My joking comment was meant to be about the media insanity that surrounds the lives of certain celebrities and that is routinely passed off as "news," not the people themselves (good, bad, or completely indifferent).

Okay, I'm going very off-topic here. So, I'll move myself along...

In your defense, TS does a fine job of remaining focused on its content and not straying into other areas. It is truly refreshing. Even "off-topic" isn't that far out of bounds if you read the threads there. With all the media saturation these days, it is a pleasant thing to find a place that focuses elsewhere. Perhaps this is why this particular article is such a novelty!

Noodle - no arguments, we all go through tough spots. Just give me a report when she finishes it and then I would be impressed. :)

I am wondering if Sarah found any evidence of Cook's 1906 expedition on the peak she alleges to have summitted.

Interesting: 15 comments on a topic everybody hates. (this is why we have a celebrity-obsessed culture -- even if we hate celebrities we can't not think about them).

I was going to make the same comment, but couldn't get beyond the irony within irony of making the comment about comments (oh...now my head is spinning).

I think she found some 110 year old vodka.

Noddle, cant you see that I was expanding on the song with a rhyme base of

a/b/c/b/d/e/g/e/h/ ad infinitum...

No worries m8,

After All,

You only have 10 x my posts,

And an exalted Senior Member status ;).

Probably not a great idea to make songs about US political leaders anyways.

I'd hate to end up in Gitmo with fellow Canadian, Omar Khadr.

Just do 100 posts and you will be exalted as well.

If the night shows do not end members up in Gitmo I doubt if ours will.
