so how do you clean a musty backpack? I have two that sat in a musty closet for years and now I'm trying to revive them. They don't have any visible mold, just a musty smell.

What kind of material are they made of? You may be able to soak them in a tub with something like Pine-Sol or another non-toxic cleaner, then wash them thoroughly and let them dry in the sun. You may want to use something like a hairdryer to dry out small pockets or places where you just can't get any sunlight on. There are also some specialized cleaners, for certain fabrics, once you figure out what it is made of. You might try contacting the manufacturer and see what they recommend.

Mirazyme works well - it's sold to take the smell out of diving suits. You can get it from Campmor. http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=7638027&memberId=12500226&storeId=226&catalogId=40000000226&langId=-1
