Waterproofing canvas

I've made some side-pockets for a rucksack with canvas, it was mostly just to have something to do over the holidays, but I think they turned out well and will take them along on a weekend trip soon.

I googled around a little about how best to waterproof them, (nothing serious, just enough so that they don't get soaked in a light-downpour), but there seemed to be a lot of differing advice on what to use. Has anyone here tried it? I was thinking about just waxing and ironing them, but are the spray on solutions any good?
