My New Home

I have spent the past 3 days searching the internet for the all in one tent. I am getting very frustrated with reviews that completely contradict each other. Please help.

I am going to need a tent that I can live out of for the next year or two while I'm in Australia, New Zealand, India, Nepal and the USA.

I’m in need of a tent that is:
1-2 person
Lighter then 5 pounds
3 season
Good ventilation in humid weather
Freestanding
Wind resistant
Rain proof
Easy to set up
Incognito color

I also can’t really tell if there is a big difference between single wall and double wall tents in regards to ventilation and interior condensation?

There are tons of really great people here with lots of information. If you don't mind, please let me know what you think would be best for my situation.

Thanks
Vega

Re: My New Home

Vega, I can't recommend one particular tent over another, but in general, some thoughts-if this is really going to be home for that long, I'd get a two person tent. More room for you and who knows whom you might meet. Forget the tiny 1 person tents-too claustrophobic. In NZ, for example, it rains a lot, even in summer. In winter, guaranteed rain anywhere in the country. I took a Sierra Designs Flashlight there and it was fine, but I'd take something else based on what I know now. If price is important, I'd be looking at an REI Half Dome or something like that. Big Agnes tents get good reviews.

There are some very light boutique tents (small companies you may not have heard of)such as Tarptent and Six Moon Designs. Big Sky makes some nice tents, but they have had serious delivery problems, so ordering one from them is sketchy. Tarptent gets rave reviews for customer service. These look like a tent/tarp hybrid-hence the name, but may be too open for places like Oz with lots of nasty bugs and other creatures. I'd look for a manufacturer that can offer replacement parts if needed.

Single wall tents, from everything I read, have condensation problems in humid weather. Tarptents have this problem, but ventilate well, which mitigates it somewhat.

I'd head for REI or a similar store that carries a wide range of tents to try them out and see them in person. Some of the mail order places will let you buy and return a tent if it doesn't suit you and it hasn't been used outdoors. REI has a very liberal return policy which makes them a good place to go. You can return almost anything.
