Campmor Backpacker Poncho
I was considering buying one of these ponchos for an upcoming trip to the Smokies and was wondering if anyone has experience with them. Are they worth the $30 or should I look at something else?

Got one. That very one, in green. I use it when needed. Ponchos of any sort have their drawbacks, but I find it easier to get on in a hurry than rain parka and rain pants. The extra length in the poncho you linked is very welcome. A standard poncho will not cover enough of the typical backpack. The one I had prior to this one -- I don't remember the brand name -- did not have the zipper just under the hood. This is a great refinement. I also like having the "brim" on the hood. All in all, unless you think it over and decide a rain parka is the way to go, you can't do much better than this one. Good price for a well-designed, hardy item.
They also make great temporary awnings etc., so it is a multi-use item.

I am not big fan of ponchos or rain paints for that fact but they have there benefits. I do keep a large military poncho in my day pack that can be used as a rain gear or a shelter. I carry a raincoat when backpacking, But that's me the poncho you are looking at looks like a good multi-use item that will give you good protection.

Did you get the poncho? If you did would you suggest it for others?

Ponchos are awesome and very versatile. They're very usefull to make a luch shelter and to just sit under to snack. I always carry one everywhere ( integral designs) and miss it dearly when i forget it.

Reminds me of an old Frank Zappa tune, boy does that thought date me,saying "is that a real poncho or is that a sears poncho".Had a very nice poncho in my youth and can still see their usefullness today below timberline and out of the wind.

If you like ponchos, consider the Gatewood Cape sold at Six Moon Designs. It turns into an excellent shelter.
Consider the Packa which doubles as a pack cover has zips for ventilation. I used this in the Smokies and found it very handy during the afternoon intermittent t-showers. I did not have to remove my pack to put on or remove my raingear.
