Re: Into The Wild

I read the book then saw the movie. I was moved by it. I felt empathy for Christopher and his family. Christopher was the kind of guy that went ahead and did things. Followed his gut and his heart. I admire people who dream then go - ready or not. But, you know - the lone trail is littered with bleeched bones.
I really and truly believe that you must take the time to learn the big picture. With the big picture in mind, you have a better chance. He should have know about the bridge.
McCandless had gear, was tough and young, thought he was indistructable. In the past when he got into a jackpot - somebody rescued him. In the high north your on your own. Some of the "go light" rules don't work there. Those old trappers were loaded down like mules. Trappers and prospectors paddling into the north usually towed a second canoe full of gear.
Bottom line was that he had bad luck. Got sick - alone - and he died. You know - even if he had a map that trail - with a log bridge - might not have been marked. Probably a lumber trail. North of Thunder Bay, Ontario where I live - most lumber roads are not on the map. Lumber companies don't want the public on them. Most are only good in winter when frozen.
McCandless had bad luck. God bless him.
