I think it is funny how some people react to this story. A lot of people (my friends included) think he was an idiot with a death wish. I think he became consumed with this idea of being in Alaska, and when you are consumed by something like that you do not want to wait. From what I gather from the book (I have not seen the movie, downfall to Auburn Alabama) and other things I have read about it, he died more on a technicality than on a mistake, by eating something no one knew could be harmful. As for knowing about the bridge or the highway I think that was part of his adventure. He wanted to be totally isolated, without the temptation to seek help or leave when something went wrong, he wanted/needed to prove to himself he could survive these things. I'm not sure if the movie goes into it but in the book the author relates some of his personal climbing experiences to McCandless and they provide some insight. Anyway, this is pure speculation and interpretation on my part. No one will ever know or understand why he did it, but I think this niche of people will at least hold a better understand of what he was seeking.
