I don't think McCandless knew much about the trail or the woods. He had bummed around the country for a year. He made an interesting canoe trip - but details are sketchy. According to the movie, the man who picked up Christopher thumming a ride, and droped him off at the trail he went in on in Alaska - gave him a pair of rubber boots. He didn't have adequate footwear. God - that's kind of basic.

Going in, McCandless crossed a river then found the abandoned bus and stopped. The bus had to be on some kind of trail. Otherwise how did it get there. McCandless couldn't get out in the spring because the river was now too high. After his death hunters drove in and found his body. They had to come in on a trail. So - there was another trail. Too bad Christopher hadn't followed that trail out earlier. I suspect it led to the bridge.

A sad story.
