Civil Air Patrol, any members out there?
Just curious to see how many people know about this organization, or who are members. I myself am a member and I love it.
CAP (civil air patrol) is basically like JROTC except larger. It is an auxillary for the United States Air Force. It all began December 1, 1941. They played a huge roll in world war 2 when CAP airplanes sank 2 german U-boats! Although they were only patrol aircraft, like a piper cub, they helped keep the atlantic coast safer.
Now days, it is still a volunteer organization. CAP consist of 3 services, Cadet programs, Emergecy services, and Aerospace education.
Now your probably wondering "Cadet programs, what is that?"
Well around half of CAP consist of cadets from age 12 to 18. The other half are senior members. I guess you could say that we are kinda like boyscouts, except more military oriented. Throughout time cadets earn rank, while learning leadership skills, and aerospace education.
I, am a cadet staff seargent (c/ssgt). And troughout my CAP experience ive learned so much about leadership. If you ever get a chance to look it up, its address is www.cap.gov
We also do alittle something called encampment. Its basically boot camp for CAP cadets, without the screaming in the face though:) If you wanna see what its like just go to You Tube and look up "oregon civil air patrol." Click on the 2008 Oregon wing encampment Cadet basic video. I actually attended this one last week.

That's cool.
I have not been in the CAP program myself, but my nephew was involved for a couple years. He had a big three ring binder full of stuff to learn.
If your not learning, you're getting dumber. - Me.

Back when we owned a plane (170B), I was associated with CAP. I say "associated" because I wasn't very actively involved, having too many other things to do. But, being a taildragger pilot, I got to fly the L-19s, where most of the folks were stuck with training wheels (as some of the old geezers hanging around Tradewinds Airport said when we landed there one day, taildraggers are "real men's planes", though they looked rather sheepish as we climbed back in after refueling, Barb in the left seat) and me in the right). The L-19 is a much more fun plane than the 172s and 182s that are mostly used by CAP these days. It's basically a tandem 185, which makes it lighter weight, hence much better power to weight ratio, plus it is rated full aerobatic.
We sold the 170 after moving back to California and finding that owning a plane and California real estate are not financially compatible.

Not a CAP member, but I do belong to a volunteer SAR team. We took part in a joint drill in Quakertown, PA last year. It was great to learn how they operate and demonstrate some of the techniques we use.
This weekend, I will be volunteering (rappel tower) at an adventure race http://www.goalsara.org/yr2008/kris_race.html in Hamburg, PA to benefit the local CAP rescue school. http://www.pawingcap.com/hawk/

I was in CAP and got about 20 hours logged. Our plane crashed after an airshow and consequently they merged our group with a non-aviation based group in the same city and I stopped going - it felt TOO MUCH like ROTC.
It was a good experience, but I'm not a pilot anymore.. just your typical airline exec now
