Off Trail New Hampshire

I am looking to explore New Hampshire! What I want to do is take a 2-3 week off trail hike into the woods but with the goal of looking for lost places, abandoned places, places of myth and legends. Maybe there were villages or towns that once existed that no one knows where they really were? Maybe story's of witches, ghost, cryptozoology, etc? I do not think I will be taking a Metal detector but It will be nice to explore places few know about!
Can any one help me out? I was thinking of doing this next Spring.

It wouldnt take two weeks but there are several caves on mt mndk. One is a manmade structure from 1900ish. Pretty hard to find, there are several lost campsites used by famous people as well. Rumors of a secret cave used by a german spy to signal u boats off the coast as well.
