Can anyone shed some light on 'typical' temperature highs & lows on the Black Mountain Crest Trail (Pisgah NF) in the winter, say January? I'm looking for some abuse... My next sleeping bag purchase is contingent on this!

Thank you in advance!

So according to the NOAA website the average January Temperature for North Carolina Climate Division 2 is 34 degrees F.; According to hikingthecarolinas.com “ The weather along the Black Mountain peaks is very unpredictable. Be prepared for temperatures 20-30 degrees cooler than the surrounding areas.”

So you should definitely be ready for possible single digits in January.

I would say if you are buying a winter bag with the intention of being comfortable on windy, snowy nights above 6K, go with at least a zero degree bag.

I hike a lot in East TN \ Western NC and went for overkill with a -10F bag. Honestly I can’t even zip that bag unless it’s well below freezing.

Thank you, Patman... I have forgotten about using the NOAA site as a resource!
