For a firsty hiking in Franconia Notch in NH on April 13 with a group of others, do I really need snow shoes and long johns? Anybody done this before, who'd be willing to share/email-Jraff55man@yahoo.com, there experiences to me? Thanks so much, John.
Also, what are the trails like. Are we talking vertical ascents?

Yes friend - you will need much much more than that too. It's still winter up there, don't forget that for a minute.

Some of the trails are steep, but the snow and ice conditions, especially above treeline, are what can make it really tough. Check out this trip report if you're thinking of Lafayette.
