I am planning to come from the United Kindom to go N-S on The John Muir Trail starting on 12 July.

1/Any idea of the likely snow conditions during this time?

2/We were planning to walk with hiking poles ( two per person )
will it be essential to take an ice axe?

3/Is there any way of checking the conditions nearer the time?

The JMT is strictly a foot path and by July no snow gear will be needed. Check out Gordie's Ramblings in the High sierra websitehttp://home.earthlink.net/~mgordon324/sierra_return.htm for valuble information on current conditions and various message boards, especially the Mt Whitney message board,it's the most active.
