AT Trail Maps - GA thru NC

Could someone tell me which of these I will need on the AT: trail maps, AT data Book, Exploring the Appalachian Trail book. Most people I have talked to say all you need is the trail data book and follow the path and the white markers. I know how to navigate using charts on the Great Lakes. I've got to believe the AT data book is not enough. Where do I find trail maps, what scale, etc. I would appreciate any suggestions.
