I came across this trail while looking at a friend's trek who wants to do this trail, and I have never heard of it.

Looks like a monster, at 5,000 miles, and wondering if this is really a trail or just a bunch of hikes alongside a road.

I don't think I'll ever be physically fit to do it, but I may join him for part of it.

Unlike the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, the John Muir Trail (which shares parts of the PCT in the Sierra), and the Continental Divide Trail, the American Discovery trail is a recreational trail rather than a through-hiker's trail. Parts are hikes/bikes/equestrian along a roadside. But parts get a little way from the roads. It lends itself more than the AT, PCT, JMT, and CDT to hiking it in sections. So you can pick and choose among sections that interest you the most. Eventually, you might just catch the bug and set out to do the whole thing.

We hiked the American DIscovery Trail from coast to coast in 2005. Here is a link to our journal.
