The NPS is now requiring permits for climbing Half Dome on weekends and holidays. The limit is 400 per day. Last summer, the average was 840/day, with as many as 1200 on certain weekends. A single person can order up to 4 permits at $1.50 each.

The reason is the increasing number of injuries and deaths for people taking a tumble. The spokesman in the article said that if someone fell near the top, it would become a mass injury incident (bowling ball?).

I climbed the cables in 1980 during the winter (Feb)when the supports were taken down but the cables were still bolted in. Knocked a ice slab off as we climbed up and it crashed very loudly into Yosemite Valley below.
