my current training regiment includes lifting 3 times a week, but not in separate muscle groups. Instead, each time I lift I work every group at once - legs, bi's, tri's, shoulders, abs, lower back, upper back, chest. This gives me a full body work out with no rest since each hike and climb I do experiences the same thing.

 

Then on off days where I don't lift, I do cardio. I typically do the stairs, but also run on the treadmill now and again. As my endurance on the stairs increases, I wear a pack and add weights to it so that I can increase leg strength at the same time and mimic the feeling of climbing up a steep incline. 

 

My latest cardio stairs last week included wearing a pack that initially weighed about 6lbs, and I added 70lbs of dumb bells to it. I did about 100 flights before calling it a day.
