Saturday morning my son and I decided to get out of Vegas for the night and camp out at Valley of Fire, Nevada's first State Park.  We had a great time hiking Saturday and Sunday.  Some picture from the trip:

Nice photos! We stopped in at VOF for couple nights on the way back from a canyon tour through southern Utah and northern AZ (during the 6 mos we were living in Riverside CA). It's a beautiful and interesting area and like a lot of state parks it's easily overlooked if you're doing the national park circuit.

Here are a couple of my favorite shots:

Right now with the long dark nights in Norway and unseasonably warm weather for the last month so that there is no skiing, the SW is looking pretty sweet. I have a colleague and a couple students spending the spring semester in Tuscon, maybe I'll have to drop in for a visit...

Thanks Red!!  Those are some nice photos you have as well.  Photography is such a great way to journal one's trips.  Ya, VOF is a beautiful and interesting area with a lot of history.  Hopefully you get another visit in.

Timing is everything. You are there at the right time. The Park is the story of rocks. It helps to study the geology to really appreciate the place.

Thanks Rob and Jeff.  ppine you are right, there is a lot of historic geology on mother nature's display out there, as well as ancient tribal history.  It is pretty fascinating stuff.  We hiked a trail that has remnants of an old movie set that was filmed there in 1965 called "the professional".  Apparently, there has been parts of several movies filmed in VOF with the most popular one being Star Trek Generations.
