Linville Gorge birthday trip

My wife and I have a tradition of backpacking on our birthdays. So for my 42nd we opted for Linville Gorge in NC.

Many thanks to Ashleigh for all the great information on the destination!

Here is an overlook on the rim near Wisemans view.

This was the upper view of the main sluice of Linville Falls.

This was our camp on one of the Chimneys on the east Rim. The picture makes it look more slanted than it was.

Some more angles.

This was taken inside Linville Caverns.

Funky huh?

I made Susan stand next to this formation for scale.

For our second night we went down in to the Gorge and camped on the river.

We had brought the raft but while day hiking for a spot deep enough to play in we found these pool toys that someone had left at another camp right at a deep pool.

So we borrowed them.

After an all-night rain the same pool we played in was untenable. We considered crossing to camp the day before....good thing we didn't.

Good times at the Gorge!

Happy Tails!

My kind of party :)  I really liked that rim camp site view.  Looked like a great spot for full moon camping.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks very much Eddy!

Yeah Ashliegh turned us on to the Chimneys was realyl cool. That camp is somewhat difficult to get to with a full pack, as you have to stow your trekking poles and climb with your hands in a few places. The Mountains to Sea trail is about 60-70 feet below that spot.

....strange that I've explored all around that gorge for years but had never actually visited it. I'll surely go back!

Awhile back I started asking for $ and gift cards toward trips instead of, well, "stuff." Don't regret that decision one bit.

You and Danny have a closed-matched race going for my favorite TRs! Linville's definitely on my short list of places I'd like to visit - nice to see ya share it with Susan, too!

Happy belated birthday, bud, and thoroughly enjoyed the report and pictures as always!

Looks fun Patman! I'm right here in NC and my wife's family lives pretty close.  It's on my list to visit. I see the Klymit raft made an appearance too!
