A recent visit to the Hudson Valley Highlands, I visited Sam's Point Preserve. Along the Shawangunk Ridge, these faults (not really caves) can be explored along with VerKeerderkill Falls in one good day of hiking.

The Ellenville Fault Ice Caves is the largest known open fault in the United States with corresponding ice caves. As a result of the cool microclimate, ice is present throughout the year and more northern plants such as Black Spruce, Hemlock, Mountain Ash, Creeping Snowberry, and bryophytes are able to survive. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in November 1967.

There are hiking trails to the ice caves which are open in the summer, but a permit is required to visit the area.

There is a very easy gravel path leading you to the top of the ridge, then into the fault.

The temperatures went from the mid 80's to the lower 50's within a few steps; I'll take that in July!

I had just read an extensive report on this area the other day but it lacked pics. I googled around a bit on the spot but thanks for posting this report as all your pics give me a better idea of what is there.

I was in Poughkeepsie, NY for a wedding weekend not that long ago and had an entire day to kill. By the looks of it, I should have done my homework and visited this place. I had no idea it was that incredible. Those photos are superb!

Thanks for the report!

Like Lonestranger, I've read about the place but never visited.  That's another one for the bucket list.  Thanks for sharing!

Great pics. That was a huge chockstone in the 5th photo! The falls looked neat also.

I agree, great pictures! Nice hat too.

This hike looks like it had a lot of highlights: blueberries, falls, views, rocks!

Thanks for sharing.
