Backcountry Access Tracker DTS

rated 5 of 5 stars The best avalanche beacon I have used. This is the simplest, most functional avalanche beacon I have ever used. You can pull it out of the box with zero experience in using a beacon and feel like a pro within 5 minutes. On top of that, it's reasonably priced and easy to find. The harness is super easy to put on and is barely noticeable. The range is good. There's not much else to say — it's the ideal beacon. I love this thing. 100% recommended. [I am a PSIA certified Alpine and Telemark Instructor]… Full review

Voile Mini Shovel

rated 5 of 5 stars If you are going winter camping and not carrying one of these (or a comparable model), you are not carrying an essential winter survival tool. The Voile Mini is one of several small snow shovels that anyone winter camping on snow should carry. This is not a full size shovel, but for all that I have done with it, it was the perfect size. I would take mine even on day trips. It is fairly light, has a metal blade, and is well made. The handle comes apart and fits back together easily. It can be used… Full review

Mammut Pulse Barryvox

rated 5 of 5 stars It works. Have carried mine for 3 years. Replaced batteries every year though they still show 85%. Good range when tested on buried beacons. I like the one hand to turn on, two hands to turn off feature. Fits in a pocket well. Has adequate leash. Full review

Backcountry Access Tracker 2

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This is such a simple transceiver to use. I'd recommend it for any recreational user. It's also commonly used by ski patrollers. This transceiver is very simple to use and that's what makes it so great. When I do practices with friends with other digital units, they seem to get hung up on other features and confused about how to interpret what the transceiver is telling them. This is due to not practicing enough, but with the Tracker 2, it is far more intuitive and even without much practice can… Full review

Lifeline Alum Sport Utility Shovel

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The Lifeline Sport utility shovel may be sold at places like Fred Meyer and WalMart, but don’t let its cheap price fool you. This is an excellent shovel. It is often marketed for auto and snowmobile use. But don’t let that fool you. It is just as, if not more, capable than many shovels many times its price, not to mention a lot lighter. I would highly recommend this to anyone needing a good low cost lightweight backcountry shovel. Works excellent in making snow caves. When I bought this I was… Full review

SnowClaw Guide

rated 2 of 5 stars Having seen but never owned a Snow Claw this is not a review but a warning: NEVER substitute a Snow Claw for a shovel when traveling in avalanche terrain. There is simply no comparison in the amount of snow moved. Full review

SnowClaw Guide

rated 5 of 5 stars YES! Long story turned short, I dug out a snow cave with one of these. It is awesome. Moves a lot of snow, but not as much a conventional backcountry shovel. Totally worth it though. Full review

Voile TelePro Shovel

rated 5 of 5 stars It changed my life. I can't believe how incredibly awesome this shovel is. I can't imagine my life without it! Full review

SnowClaw Guide

rated 5 of 5 stars When I was a kid growing up on the beaches of San Diego, I would always use a strong frisbee to dig holes on the beach. It was much faster and more powerful than any of my friends using a shovel. I was in the market for a shovel this winter, and noticed this innovative item as an alternative to a snow shovel at REI. I was able to test this powerful tool in crusted snow and 4 feet of powder alike last weekend on a snowshoe trip. It is so much easier to use in all but the most icy of snow conditions. Full review
