Source: bought it new
Price Paid: $50 from ebay
Light weight, good bite, good room under the head to attach a leash
- Effective tool
- More expensive than similar axes that might weigh a little more
I have used this axe on several mountaineering trips. It bites well into snow and ice and is great for stabilizing the climber during steep approach hikes. I have practiced arresting with it many times and it is very effective at self arresting the climber.

Black Diamond built the Raven Ultra Ice Axe for fast-and-light alpine routes and technical ski mountaineering. Even though it weighs only 12oz in a 50cm length, the Raven Ultra is still completely functional and easily stands up to the abuse alpine tools take on a regular basis. Unlike those other lightweight axes, this one still includes a full steel head and pick, so you're not trying to stop your slide with a soft piece of aluminum.
