Definitely stays on the heel, with plenty of warmth, protection, and support. I've used these mountain biking in snowy conditions, hiking and trekking in snowy backcountry, and trail running in snow/slush. They have been super comfortable, staying high over my calves to keep me warm. The 4 star rating is for durability issues: my left sock is separating at the heel seam...darn.
