Burton Gore-Tex Mitt

rated 3 of 5 stars
photo: Burton Gore-Tex Mitt insulated glove/mitten

For the price, good mitts. Warm and waterproof.

Pros

  • warm
  • waterproof
  • good price, esp. on sale

Cons

  • floppy
  • not leather
  • not very durable

Having owned a pair of Burton's Gore-tex gloves and compared them very favorably to other non-Gore-tex offerings as far as waterproofing and breathability, I felt like the Gore-tex mitts were the way to go for those frigid days on the mountain.

I was somewhat correct. They deliver warmth and waterproofing in a competitively priced package. I got them for $35, and they are almost always on sale if you're willing to pick up last year's model. They are your basic gloves/mitts with nylon shell, Gore-tex membrane, microfleece liner, and a pair of glove liners included.

They are pretty dang comfy, but they tend to deteriorate quickly.  The nylon on the outside doesn't last more than two seasons, and breaks down with extended use. The liner will begin to pull away from the inside of the glove, and they begin to smell quickly unless washed.  I used to love these, and they're great for the super cold days, but after recently trying a pair of POW leather gloves, I will never go back to non-goatskin gloves.  They are more comfortable, more waterproof if treated correctly, more durable, and just overall much better.

The Burton mitts are a good entry-level offering, but I would recommend going with something leather.
