Brunton TruArc 15

rated 3 of 5 stars Not something I'll recommend. All the different tools and function that come with this are a good idea in theory but, when you put it together with chintzy plastic it doesn't matter how good of a cool idea you have. When you put it into play it can become a piece of trash really quick. And that is my experience with this compass.  They could have used some better lightweight material to snap things together. The center piece pushed out so easily and the plastic holding it in broke too. I couldn't… Full review

Brunton TruArc 5

rated 5 of 5 stars Great backup compass, With today's GPS, compass and maps are lost art. I use this as my backup, a just-in-case tool. But I find using it simple and reliable. I use it all the time. Precision artillery, NO. Finding my way home, YES! Full review

Suunto MC-2

rated 2.5 of 5 stars Works great for me, I have heard of people having up to a 6 degree offset, which could be catastrophic. I wish it had a measuring device in more that just 1:24000, also the miles are NM but not labeled as such. I have used this a few times for bushwhacking locally, got me back to the trail. If you know how to use all the functions and have a good map this is an excellent beginner compass. The Rotating dial gets kind of rough if it gets dirty. However, it stays in place.  It is pretty easy to use,… Full review

Brunton TruArc 3

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Inexpensive, accurate, precise, and compact compass with a global needle and adjustable declination. A compass you’ll likely pack everywhere. Not loaded with features, but all the features you must have to navigate any terrain with your map. You can trust this item to do what you need it to do.  I've heard the TruArc 3 referred to as a training compass, a starter compass, and a beginner's compass. I take exception to that because there really is no such thing. Yes, there are basic base plate… Full review

Brunton 8099 PRO Eclipse

rated 2 of 5 stars Good idea. Poor construction. Over the years, I've had a lot of compasses as a 17-year-member and Team Leader of a local S&R organization. They just interest me and I get a lot of use from them. I've owned several Bruntons, Silvas, and Suuntos among others. Every Brunton I've owned eventually got a bubble in the capsule. None of the Silvas. The disc (needle) of the Brunton also jumps off the needle it rotates on, causing it to tip off at an angle. It's just bothersome for the amount of $ one… Full review

Brunton 10B Baseplate Compass

rated 4.5 of 5 stars There were two major needs for this compass: 1. It must have 2 degree increments and 2. Must be able to set declination. It has both! I bought this compass for navigation in the backcountry. It has worked fine. I can set the declination to my area without needing any tools. The only thing that worried me was if I would accidentally adjust the declination because there is no tool needed but I haven't had any issues with it. For a compass for under $15 I think this is a fine addition to the Ten Essentials! Full review

Suunto M-3D Leader Compass

rated 5 of 5 stars This is a great compass and may be your lifesaver. It is compact, non-electronic, luminous, magnifier lens, and has the ability to adjust for the regional declination. This could be your lifesaver when you need it the most (lost, injured). Suunto is a primo leader in compasses. Combine it with your GPS system and with your maps and you should be able to keep out of trouble in the outdoors.   It is a high quality product from a leader in the field. I highly recommend the compass and I highly recommend… Full review

Sun Company MiniComp II

rated 3 of 5 stars At 9g/.32 oz, the Sun MiniComp II is a surprisingly well-featured mini-compass that takes up little space and virtually no weight. A great backup to digital technology or a lightweight backup option when you need to check direction. Don't swap out your go-to Suunto or Silva, but if the ultralight bug has bitten you, this is something to consider for quickly orienting maps or taking a bearing. When I am in the backcountry, I make it a point to have map and compass with me. I generally carry these… Full review

Silva Lensatic 360

rated 5 of 5 stars Sturdy, reliable version of the Engineer's liquid-damped lensatic compass. My Silva Lensatic 360 compass has proven to be sturdy, reliable, and accurate compass for wilderness navigation. It is not made by Silva of Sweden but by Johnson Outdoors, who own the Silva brand name in North America and who source this compass from a manufacturer in Taiwan (Manufacturers in both Japan and Taiwan have supplied thousands of these liquid-damped lensatic compasses over the years, some better made than others).
