photo: Firebox Gen2 Stainless Firebox Nano Ultralight Stove wood stove

The Firebox Nano portable stove is a lightweight folding stove that only requires twigs and small sticks for fuel. When folded, this compact stove fits easily in a pocket. It's the perfect backup stove to take along on any expedition, should your primary stove run out of fuel or fail.

Pros

  • Small
  • Lightweight
  • Uses small bits of twigs and sticks for fuel
  • Durable
  • Well made

Cons

  • The flames can produce a lot of soot that messes up your cooking pots.

This is a video review of the Firebox Nano G2 Ultralight Stove. I'm testing a tiny, portable stove that only requires small twigs and sticks for fuel, yet is capable of cooking meals and boiling water without using large logs or pressurized fuels.

I had received this stove as a gift and was hesitant to use it, thinking that tiny twigs would not produce enough heat to boil water and cook food. However I was pleasantly surprised at how well this tiny stove performs. I now take this on all my expeditions, primarily as a backup.

Background

Have only used this product a few times, but can report that it works really well.

Source: received it as a birthday gift

This is a superb lightweight one-person stove. Ideal for deep backcountry walking as the amount of wood required to run it is minimal. It packs down really small too.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Compact, easily stowable
  • Economical
  • Quick assembly

Cons

  • Can be a bit slow

This is a brilliant stove. You're not gonna cook three-course meals on this, but if you just want brew stops and ration heat ups, then it's superb. Due to its size you can really burn small pieces of wood making it really efficient. You can also burn longer pieces using the cross feed system.

I have now stopped using gas canisters because with the Firebox Nano there is no waste to carry out. I carry a small mesh bag with me and pick up pieces of wood on the go. When I stop it's ready to use. I would really recommend this stove to any solo walker who wants a zero running cost option.

Simple, but brilliant.
