Granite Gear Long Howl
Source: bought it new
Price Paid: $80
This is the best dog pack that money can buy. Granite Gear in my opinion makes the very best dog packs. I used the Alpha pack for my dog when I thru hiked the Appalachian Trail. I decided to upgrade to the Long Howl pack for my new dog. I have been backpacking a couple of times, including a 5-day trip on the Long Trail and I have seen no problems with the pack or the dog wearing it.
- Rides well on dog
- Pack is removable from frame
- Good warranty
- Sized too big
- Frame is somewhat tedious to put straps through
My big suggestion is to get a smaller size then you think. My 35 pound dog wears the XS, my 75 pound dog wears the M. Also, remember to never overload the pack. Your dog will not like you for it. I never put more then 5 days of food in their packs. As they eat the food I then sneak other items in like garbage or a ground cloth.

Where to Buy
Here's what other sites are saying:
The Long Howl is for the serious hiking dog. The padded harness wraps entirely around the dogs torso, to avoid any webbing chafing the dogs skin. The fit is adjustable and secure, so the pack bags that attach to the harness ride stable without much twisting. As you take reasonable care, the lopsided carry of lesser dog packs is a thing of the past. The inside layer is stretch woven nylon, the same stuff Granite Gear uses on the skin side of their award winning human packs, for a wrinkle free, smooth surface. The harness can be left on and saddlebags removed for hiking breaks. The harness can also double as a windbreaker and provide insulation for the dogs core in cold conditions. The pack bags feature a water-resistant zipper that eliminates the need for a zipper flap, which always seem to get snagged. The pack bags and harness are shaped so as not to interfere with the dogs natural gait and movements. Granite Gear's shop dog, Sydney, can even execute airborne catches when they toss a frisbee while shes wearing the pack. So, when your dog is part of The Pack on the trail with you, get a pack thats engineered to carry well and last for the Long Howl.
CLOSEOUTS . Granite Gear's Long Howl dog pack lets your canine hiking partner carry his own gear in comfort. Three adjustable padded straps are lined with woven fabric, and the removable saddlebags have reflective trim. Available Colors: TIGER/SLATE.
