GSI Outdoors Spice Missle
A clever way to take your next backpacking meal from bland to grand! Bring the GSI Spice Missile with you on your next outdoor adventure and enjoy food with flavor!
Pros
- Lightweight
- Durable
- Modular design
Cons
- Only holds around half ounce of each spice
- Bulky compared to other spice carrying methods
- Did not have labels for some spices

I bought the GSI Spice Missile for an overnight trip to a local campground. I was car camping but trying to avoid taking the entire contents of my house. I have since used it on two overnight backpacking trips with less than 8 miles on each trip.
Specs
- Copolyester Resin Body
- 2.1 ounces total empty weight
- 2.45 ounces with my spices
- Waterproof
- 1.5” x 1.5” x 4.0”
- 6 chambers
- Holds around 3 ounces of spices---Half ounce of spice fits in each of the 6 chambers
There are three, dual-chambered modules that can be screwed onto each other to form a watertight seal keeping spices dry. Each module has a single sided dispenser cap that twists to either side, is easily removable and stays on when screwed together. There are different size screens for the three dispenser caps.
The base is the widest section and it houses the filler cap which is held in place by the orange base plate. The filler cap only fits in one way and is easy to get to. The base does have a small wobble when fully assembled. Does not affect use.
Construction
The copolyester resin body feels very strong. All of the threads are thick and sturdy. When screwed together there is no movement and I have not had one back off or come unscrewed yet. The base plate still holds secure.
I tested the waterproofness by sealing it in a Tupperware container full of water. I gave it a few hard shakes and let it sit overnight. All of the spices were dry and did not show any signs that moisture had gotten to them.
Features
Comes with labels attached to the package to make identifying your spices easier. I do not use them because I am always using different ones and also some of the ones I use they did not provide labels for. This is a nice feature even thought I don’t use it.
Ease of Use
The gray top cap will fit on any of the three modules so you can take 2, 4, or all 6 spices. The modules screw apart with little effort. Twisting, removing, installing, and using the dispensers are all a breeze.
Filling it is the trickiest part. I use a small flask funnel and a half teaspoon measuring spoon in combination with the filler cap. I still spilled a small amount, but this was easiest for me.
This thing is so small and light you can stow it anywhere in your pack and will probably not notice it. I keep mine in my roll top food bag.
Conclusion
I feel the price I paid was definitely worth it. The construction is solid and does not seem cheap at all. That surprised me seeing how much it weighs! Only 2 ounces makes it worth throwing in the pack for an overnight or weekend backpacking trip.

I love bringing more than just salt and pepper out on the trail, and this thing has six different compartments. It can also be broken down to three different parts, so you can carry less or more. Comes with four different shaker lids with different sizes of openings.
Pros
- Small
- 6 separate compartments
- 4 shaker lids with different size hioles
- Take 1 spice jar or all 3
- All the pieces fit together
Cons
- It is not a UL accessory item
- Could be lighter
I bought this in 2018 to bring on my long thru-hike of the JMT with my son. I have since taken it, or a part of it, on every hike since then.

As you can see above you have three divided jars, four shaker lids, a grey top, and an orange bottom that holds an extra shaker top. I love the versatility of this spice jar. It is easy to use and easy to clean. To get my spices in the compartments I use a mini funnel, like the kind that comes with Mini Travel container kits at Target or Publix.

I usually bring salt, pepper, garlic powder, cinnamon, on most trips, so I leave one of the jars behind. Sometimes I brought chili flakes and sriracha too, and that took up all jars (6 different spices).
I gave 4 stars because, although I love it, I do wish that it was little lighter. I think they can make it lighter.
