I've had this bag for almost 8 years and have taken it all over the world abusing it along the way. The bag doesn't look any worse for wear. I've overpacked it to the point I had to hold the zippers closed with zip ties, and the bag took it. I've used it to carry over 50 pounds, while not super comfortable, the bag handled the weight fine. If you are just going to use this to carry books and the like, it should last forever. If you are tougher on your bags, I've had one last for almost 8 years.
