We are avid canoe-campers in the BWCA and had tried many different ideas for storing and transporting food and kitchen gear along with keeping an eye on value. We came across this food pack with the corrugated plastic liner and thought we would give it a try. If nothing else, we figured we could use the pack for carrying other items if it did not work out - but happily it was a wise choice for us!
The corrugated plastic liner is made from recycled plastic, which is very cool! And can be recycled when it wears out. The whole set up is fairly light-weight - under 5 lbs. and it worked perfectly for carrying a week's worth of food, camp stove, utensils, pans, plates, fuel bottles, etc.
The box is waterproof and outer nylon pack dries quickly so no added weight from the pack getting wet. The box is sturdy enough to use as a semi cooking station, you can flip the lid over and use it for a place to hold your sandwich stuff or things you are assembiling without fear of it falling off as the box lid sides come up about 4 inches. The pack has straps that are nicely padded and easy to adjust for all sizes.
A couple of things we did to add to the pack was to duct tape the edges of the corrugated box as it was a bit rough and we purchased two of those insulated hot/cold reusable bags with the zipper tops (under 10 dollars) to organize our food into smaller packs and make it easy to lift out without having to dig to the bottom or have everything collapse into the bottom.
One other really nice feature that thankfully we have not had to use is that the pack is guaranteed and they will repair it. Made in Ely, MN USA, which makes me feel even better about my purchase. The pack is pretty easy to stow in a tree to keep it from the bears, they do sell a kit, but we were able to do with with some rope and caribiners that we already had. When we returned from our trip, we simply stored all the kitchen stuff right in the box once it was all cleaned up and it's all ready for our next trip.
This pack allows for flexibility in it uses while giving the buyer a good value for their money!
