Lowe Alpine Contour Classic 90+15

rated 4.5 of 5 stars

The Contour Classic 90+15 has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best expedition packs for 2024.

My experiences are similar to the previous author. This pack is a diamond in the rough. If you need a big pack to haul gear to a base camp, or to take on a two-week solo, this is the pack to have. It's very versitile so it accomodates weekend trips as well. Lowe's stabilization system is superior to the majority of what is available. The divider to the sleeping bag area can be removed, but it's great for storing climbing equipment, rope and other gear that you want easily accessible. All this at a fraction of the price of a Dana or Gregory. A great pack, what else can I say?

Design: Top and bottom loading ("A" compartment)
Size: approx 5800 cu. in. (all compartments)
Number of Pockets: top and A compartments
Max. Load Carried: 85 lbs.
Height of Owner: 6'1"
Price Paid: $160

Good value no-frills pack. Sturdy and rugged, but very few "features." LOTS of room, but no outside zippered pockets except for lid. Side "wand pockets" are good for wands, tent-poles, fishing rods, etc., but a standard 1L Nalgene water bottle is a VERY snug fit if the pack is full. No provision for water bladder/drink tube. Lid does NOT convert to fanny pack. Suspension is very good, fits me well. Hip belt is well padded. I can hike all day with 50 lbs. and feel fine. All in all a good pack if you don't want to spend $200+.

Design: Top loading
Size: 90 + 15
Number of Pockets: 1
Max. Load Carried: 45 - 50 lbs.
Height of Owner: 6' 1"
Price Paid: $130

This is a very sturdy and functional, yet simple pack well-worth the price. I had no problems with it at all during a 10-day trek in New Mexico, and consider it an excellent pack for various uses and conditions. It has more than enough space for a large amount of gear, and the capability of additional storage on the outside.

Design: top-loading internal
Size: 6,400
Number of Pockets: 4
Max. Load Carried: 60 lbs
Height of Owner: 5'8''
Price Paid: $120
