photo: Lowe Alpine Ophir weekend pack (50-69l)

I bought this pack for my 9-yr-old son, and he loves it! It has many of the features of the big guys' rucks, but is sized to fit him. He has carried it twice now on short trips, carrying all of his own gear. He hasn't fallen behind or complained yet. The pockets are in the right places and are roomy enough for his snacks and water bottles. I own an old Lowe that I bought in '85, that has seen every major airport in the world and been on many an "adventure", and it is still a very useable backpack.

I bought this ruck on sale (I think it was mismarked), but even at the listed price of $89 it would be a great deal esp. for a growing kid.

Design: Internal
Size: 3600
Number of Pockets: 3
Max. Load Carried: 30 lbs ?
Height of Owner: 4' 9"
Price Paid: $45

I have had mine for more than 8 years, taking on many camping trips, backpacking, as well as several canoeing trips. iIt has lasted me the entire duration of my time in the scouting movement.

Pros

  • Convenient side and top pockets
  • Large inside, lots of storage

Cons

  • Not the best layout of packets
  • Some straps wore over time

This bag was easy to use, as well as had a very good back comforter.

Price Paid: $40

I really like this pack. It is one of very few that fit my short torso (15in) well and don't pull the shoulders. Would be nice if it had a little more space and longer sleeping pad straps, but this is minor compared to how comfortable it is. I did not cary more than 25-30lbs. Side pockets are convinient.

Design: internal frame
Size: S
Max. Load Carried: 25-30lbs
Height of Owner: 5 1
Price Paid: $60

I bought this pack because of how inexpensive it was. I sacrificed a few amenities but all and all the Ophir is a solid backpack. There are only four storage pockets which is limiting and balancing it can be tricky. I recommend it for beginners.

Price Paid: $50-$60
