Mountainsmith Antero

rated 4.0 of 5 stars

The Antero has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best weekend packs for 2024.

I got the pack, which is about a '99 model, at REI. This pack got a poor score in Backpacker magazine because the old version had a wimpy suspension. They've fixed it, and the suspension is beefy enough that when I had skis and alpine boots on it the weight was on my hips. A very good general use climbing as well as lightweight backpacking pack. Big enough to bring my alpine gear into Tuckerman, but compresses down well for shorter trips when I'll be on AT gear. For someone my height, the harness is extended longer than would be ideal, but it works fine. Overall, a good quality pack with good features like the J-zip, bellows pockets, shovel flap and bungee cord, with a strong suspension. I especially like the hip belt, with the Delta Strap deal. Very effective
