MSR Skinny One

I was in the market for a solo tent to use when out by myself or with a party of 3, that was comfortable, relatively light, weather resistant, and reasonably priced. The Skinny One met all of my criteria.

PROS: At 5' 11" and 230 lbs this tent is more than roomy for me. It is long enough I can store things at the foot end of the tent if need be, but most fit along my sides without feeling crowded.

It is fully seam sealed, which is a plus over most tarp tents, and some single wall tents, that have to be seam sealed and re-seam sealed, and can handle moderate wind and heavy rain without so much as a drip inside.

The angled entry allows entry and exit without getting the inside wet. The vestibule will hold a pack and boots, but doesn't allow enough room for exit or entry if they are in the vestibule.

Although not as lightweight as some solos or tarp tents, it provides a ton of comfort and reliability while still saving a couple of pounds over a two man tent. I can sit up inside, but my head does rub the ceiling. The foot end is a giant mesh window when open and you can star gaze while falling asleep on nice nights. It has a full vent down the ceiling of the tent to help ventilate, which exits over the vestibule.

This thing sets up and takes down in seconds right out of the box with no practice. The single wall design is nice since you can set up or take down in the rain with out the inside of the tent getting wet.

CONS: The front entry is easy enough to get in and out, but I do prefer a side entry. This also restricts vestibule space since you have to climb in or around your gear to get in/out of the tent.

The tent condensates bad in cool or wet weather when you have to close the top vent and big window in the end. I take my camp towel in the tent with me to wipe it down in the morning. I knew this going into the purchase, as this is a frequent problem with single wall tents in general, but if vented some, it had no condensation down to 40 degree nights.

Overall, the Skinny One is a great tent, especially for the price and room it has. I would recommend this tent to those looking for light weight and comfort, but it's probably about 1 lb heavy for those seeking ultra light shelter status.
