Helm Forge and Helm Grind

rated 5.0 of 5 stars
photo: Helm Forge and Helm Grind knife/tool

Helm Grind takes precut blanks of James Helms designs then are heat treated and ground. Helm Forge is where James hand forges your knife and beats on the steel etc. He makes some of the finest knives and hawks I've come across and his pricing is very reasonable. He is also a really nice guy.

Pros

  • A custom knife or hawk without the custom price tag
  • Well made
  • Fit and finish

Cons

  • None

James Helm is first off one of the nicest guys you may ever deal with. His pricing for a custom knife are great and he is a one-man operation too. His hand-forged items are amazing and his grind level stuff is the same.

The first two knives in the picture are a forged camp knife and a knife, I can't recall what he called it but you can see that knife in use on YouTube along with some of his other videos. He is also on Instagram. I also added the Hawks I have from him.

Some of the knives don't have handles yet because he is working on them so you can change them out yourself if one day you want green and the next orange. All you gotta have is the scales. His hawks come in 12, 15, and 18 inches long and can have two different choices of spikes or none at all. A sharpened beard is also offered. On the knife side you will also see his parang, which just feels great in hand followed by the Bengazi Bowie which the first ones made went to the soldiers in that fight.

Now he is open to working with you to get you the knife you want and makes other knives and tools, so don't be afraid to call him and start working on your dream knife.
