Feature-rich, value-priced PFD, perfect for kayaking.

Pros

  • Comfortable profile of flotation padding, leaving shoulders free for non-restrictive paddling
  • Panel design, separated by mesh vents conforms to your body
  • Quality fabric and construction
  • Value priced—features equal to PFDs costing twice as much

I found this brand PFD at a well-known general sports chain store after an exhaustive search for a comfortable life vest for recreational kayaking that fit my restrictive budget and my 50s-plus female torso. I had tried out several other brand vests that I had bought then returned due to deciding I did not like the fit.

I tried on the ONYX MoveMent Torsion vest in the local store, really liked the fit and the price, but did not buy it right away. Later I returned to the store, but the vest was gone so I ordered it online.

I LOVE this vest. It is very comfortable and perfectly designed for kayaking, leaving freedom of movement for your arms. I think this brand offers a lot of bang for your buck. This vest has the styling, fit, and features of vests that cost twice as much. There are front pockets with zips that are parallel to the zip front. Inside one of the pockets is an attached bright safety orange whistle.

The vest has a high cut back with mesh bottom to not interfere with your kayak seat. I personally preferred this vest over another ONYX PFD model because this vest had an elastic bottom with a buckle under the zip front which helps the vest stay down and not ride up while paddling. And there are mesh vents in the front which help keep you cool. The adjustable shoulder straps are made of neoprene for comfort and feature reflective strips.

I am into my second season of paddling with this PFD and it still looks brand new. I have been thoroughly pleased with my ONYX vest and hope it will give me years of service. Try it out yourself, especially if you are on a budget—you won't be disappointed.
