I bought the Boreas after seeing a review in a well known backpacking magazine. I was under the impression that this garment was a pullover jacket like a standard soft-shell. It's more like a baselayer with a hood.

This item is:

  • Not Warm
  • Not Windproof
  • Not Waterproof

I knew it wasn't windproof and waterproof when I bought it, but the fact it really provides no additional warmth is the kicker. I'm not sure exactly what purpose this item serves. I think I've ended up with an expensive baselayer.

Maybe through trail and error I'll find some niche that this garment fits. I have worn this item, but it's more a case of wear what I normally would, and then throw this over the top, more because it's new, rather than because I need it.

It's quite a nice color though...

Update: November 18, 2011

Oh, one more thing. Maybe it's designed to go over helmets, but the hood is useless. After pulling over my head, the brow comes down to about the tip of my nose, which makes seeing a bit tricky.

I've tried rolling the hood back, but it doesn't stay in place and there is no way to secure it.

If you're sitting still and eating, this is probably a plus, as really only your mouth will be exposed...
