RailRiders Jammin' Short

photo: RailRiders Jammin' Short hiking short

Best pair of shorts I have ever owned. Still wear two pairs that are 10+ years old and have hiked 500+ miles.

Pros

  • Bomb-proof nylon
  • Easy access pockets, lots of storage space
  • Comfortable
  • Crotch gusset
  • Easy movement
  • Quick drying

Cons

  • Weak to fire

These are the best all-purpose shorts I have ever owned. I rarely wear anything else. They are lightweight, comfortable, and extremely rugged. I have spent months at a time hiking/bushwhacking in just a single pair and the only hole they have is from a stray ember during a summer bonfire.

The elastic waist makes them comfortable and they fit nicely on a variety of waist sizes. They dry super fast. They are very breathable and comfortable even on hot days. I like the cargo pockets because you can store a lot in them if you need. I have done a lot of work in environmental education and kids always hand me random stuff, whether it is trash or weird trinkets they bring with them, and having extra pockets is great for that.

When I was a sophomore in college I did a NOLS semester in New Zealand. I wore these shorts every day for almost three months and they were the best thing I had on the trip. Hiking, kayaking, swimming, cliff jumping, sailing, exploring, they did everything.

Only con — and I seriously mean the ONLY thing at all wrong with these shorts — is that, like all nylon products (and really, pretty much all synthetics), they do not like fire. Hopefully you aren't standing that close to a fire anyway!

[Disclosure: I am a relative of RailRiders who has been wearing these clothes since I was born. I am a current RailRiders employee and a longtime RailRiders wearer.]
