Sierra Designs Astro AST

rated 4.0 of 5 stars

The Astro AST has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best three-season tents for 2024.

A friend and I recently used this newly designed Astro AST on a 5-night trip on the north shore of Lake Superior. We used the matching footprint (about $35 more) and were able to get a really tight pitch in 5 to 10 min. without rushing it. This tent could be up in much less time if weather was bad, but it would be tough to line up seams and make the fly really tight in that short of time.

This tent was extremely weatherproof. It withstood a violent thunderstorm and all night rains without letting in one drop of water. It comes fully seam sealed right out of the box. Space was just right for two 6'0", 190 lbs guys with three-season gear. However the vestibule was a little tight to store boots and packs. U certainly couldn't climb over them in the middle of the night if u needed to get out. Having a single front door also makes entry and exit from this tent a bit of a chore, however this is typical of any front entry style tent and should be expected. Sierra Design's new stash door is a great improvement over their previous design doors which would lay on the ground and get trampled. All and all we were very satisfied with this tent's performance and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
