Sierra Designs Sphere Expedition

rated 5.0 of 5 stars

The Sphere Expedition has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best four-season tents for 2024.

If it's a four-season tent you're looking for, enter the Sphere Expedition. I have yet to find wind that couldn't roll off the shoulder of this tent thanks to the well placed poles and internal/external guys.

Its full coverage fly comes close to the ground with a skirt on the vestibule's bottom to help keep out rain splash and snow on uneven ground. The large front and rear doors can be zipped from the top down to allow for controlled venting. It's sold as a three-person tent and that it is, with the large vestibule able to hold all of their gear. The design is very similar to the Dome Expedition but is a little higher, with more vertical walls and a D shaped fly door making it less aero-dynamic.

Sierra Designs has discontinued this tent back around 1996 so you'd be hard pressed to find a new one, but I thought I'd give this mini review anyway.

Design: 4 season expedition dome
Sleeps: 3
Ease of Setup: quick for a 5 pole tent
Weight: 9 Ibs
Price Paid: $725 CND

This tent is the bomb. I've never been in a storm this tent couldn't shrug off. I'm 6'3" and about 210lbs. so I use it as a 2-person tent most of the time, giving me lots of room for 2 thermarests and gear.

The only fault of this tent is how hot it gets on a calm summer day.

Design: 4 season free standing dome
Sleeps: 3
Ease of Setup: colour code your own poles with tape and its a piece of cake
Weight: unknown
Price Paid: about $500 cdn.
