Recent Sleeping Bag/Pad Reviews

Sierra Designs Ridge Runner 15

rated 4 of 5 stars Excellent value for a quality entry-level, down sleeping bag. This bag has come with me on all of my alpine backpacking trips for the past few years and is no worse for wear. Though this model is now out of production, I'd recommend Sierra Designs newer mummy-style bags (Zissou line), which look be a similarly great value. When I started to head out on backpacking trips for the first time a few years ago, I lusted for those top-of-the-line down bags made by companies like Feathered Friends and Western… Full review

MontBell Down Hugger 900 #5

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The MontBell Down Hugger 900 #5 38F sleeping bag is a high quality, super comfortable, accurately rated, very compressible, and lightweight option for anyone in the market for a new bag. I would recommend this bag to anyone who is looking to upgrade their bag, or simply shed some weight off of their pack load. This is one bag that you will not be disappointed by. This product was provided by Montbell for testing by the Trailspace Review Corps. Initial Impressions: When I removed the bag from its… Full review

Marmot Men's Helium

rated 5 of 5 stars This is a lightweight, premium quality sleeping bag. It sets the gold standard for three season backpacking, especially for people in a down-friendly environment like the Rocky Mountains. I've had this bag for several years, and it is still pretty much the same model. Why? Because it's hard to improve on a near-perfect sleeping bag. The bag is warm down to its 15 degree rating and then some. There are no cold spots and no drafts. That's what you pay for when you shell out three hundred dollars. Full review

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir AirTap Pump Kit

rated 4 of 5 stars A simple and effective, high-volume inflation device. Overpriced for what it is, but cheaper than the alternatives. A relatively inexpensive, lightweight, and simple solution to the pad inflation problem. The kit comes with a 50 x 75 cm (20 x 30 in) plastic bag that can hold maybe 10 liters (just guessing). To put the device together you just poke a hole through the bag from the inside using the beveled end of the hard plastic piece, then slide the rubber tube over it from the outside so that the… Full review

Alpine Design 45-degree Micro Lite Mesa Rec Bag

rated 4.5 of 5 stars An inexpensive hybrid design sleeping bag that works great in warm weather. Would be a perfect lightweight option for emergency equipment in a vehicle as well as being a decent bag for summer backpacking. Being a budget backpacker, I realized that one major way I could cut weight off my base load was to find a lighter sleeping bag that would keep me comfortable. I am also a stomach sleeper (one leg bent), so a skinny bag (mummy) wasn't going to cut it for me. In reality, almost anything was going… Full review

Big Agnes Pumphouse

rated 3 of 5 stars The BA Pumphouse is too low-volume to be a good inflation device, and that property is the main feature that differentiates it from any other lightweight, waterproof, roll-top stuff sack. It does, however, have an unintended use -- it makes a good solar water heater. Although it is listed as just a stuff sack in the headline here on TS, it is really intended for use as a mattress inflater, with the suggested stuff sack and pillow as secondary uses. The bottom of sack has a little nozzle on it that… Full review

Kelty Men's SB 20

rated 5 of 5 stars I would highly reccomend this sleeping bag. It was warm, and the head and foot box will always be dry. Dri-Down is an excellent advantage over the normal down. We got the SB 20 because I was looking for a lightweight, DriDown bag. I got this one because of the extra protection Kelty puts on the bags. The head and foot boxes each have a water resistant covering to help you stay protected from any condensation that comes off of a tent.  The bag was plenty warm for me, and felt good. All the zippers… Full review

Helinox Camp Cot

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Lightweight (about 2kg) and most easy installation under 1.5 min with good design. Only the price is slightly high. I'd been looking for a light and easy cot and found two of all. They were the Helinox Cot 1 and Therm-a-Rest ultralight Cot. I gave my choice to the Helinox Cot 1 because it needs really fewer motions of setting up than the Ultralite cot and more reliabilities from their DAC pole. Full review

Therm-a-Rest Stuff Sack Pillow

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This is a nice, lightweight, and reasonably priced stuff sack/pillow that held up to some wet days and nights pretty well. I like that it is compact and lightweight and dual purpose. I was looking for a cheap stuff sack and I have liked Therm-a-Rest products before so I got this one. It works well and is super lightweight, which is nice. I took it on a trip where we had a lot of wet weather and it stayed dry pretty well. I like that it's a good price too. Full review
