Recent Sleeping Bag/Pad Reviews

Big Agnes Q-Core SL

rated 5 of 5 stars This is a very good pad. Comfortable and fairly warm too. Started using it at basecamp tenting for over a month in France and Turkey. Held up well for at least a year or so before developing flex fatigue holes between the inflation piece and the fabric.  (I am rough on gear, leaving it in my car in summer heat etc.) This probably had some to do with the heat as well loosening the fabric at the spot. The supplied patch glue had long since melted in the heat so I just used some JB Weld that was handy… Full review

Mountain Hardwear UltraLamina 0°

rated 5 of 5 stars The bag is warm, packable, and good quality. Someone who sleeps cold should do well in this bag. This is the best sleeping bag I've used so far. Using it recently on the AT it kept me warm @ 20°F and got too hot when I zipped it up the second night @27°F in the tent. I have a feeling it will go down to 0°F, but it works well into the teens. Have the regular size so there is extra room all over the bag for me to move around in. I probably should have a short, but the extra room allows me to store… Full review

Marmot Always Summer

rated 4 of 5 stars Took this camping on a chilly April night in Utah and it stood up well. I was able to slip a small liner inside as well and it got too warm. This bag kept me incredibly warm and was able to fit a liner in quite easily. However the foot box was smaller than I expected. Not horribly so, but just enough to notice. Getting in and out typically wasn't an issue, however the zipper would get stuck every once in a while. Easy enough to adjust. The bag packs incredibly well and puffs up easily after having… Full review

Cocoon Sleeping Bag Hood Pillow

rated 4 of 5 stars This is a nice lightweight pillow that is comfortable to sleep on and fits nicely into the hood of your sleeping bag. While I have been focused on getting the base weight of my pack down as low as I can (currently it is at about 21 lbs) I am also older, retired, and want to be comfortable when I am backpacking on week long trips, so I am willing to pay a slight weight penalty and carry an inflatable mattress and pillow. For a pillow I considered just using a stuff sack filled with a jacket or fleece… Full review

Therm-a-Rest Men's ProLite 4

rated 4 of 5 stars Excellent and durable pad. Slightly heavy by today's standard, but cheaper than the ultralight bunch. I've used a Prolite 4 (that's today's ProLite Plus) from 2003 to 2016. I have the 3/4 version. The most important thing about it is that it works, it really self-inflates, and it's durable. Some notes and details: a. Durability:  I always use a ground sheet or inside a tent; I never had a puncture. I had two mats; one started leaking from the valve after 10 years (needed valve replacement), the… Full review

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Venture WV

rated 5 of 5 stars A mattress that will give you a good night's rest, great addition to your gear if you're looking for an additional comfort after a long hike. It's cheap and very comfortable. Really a bang for a buck. This product offers protection from the ground e.g. damp, cold, uneven surface. Very easy to set up—you just unroll it, blow for about 10 full breaths and you have an air mattress in the wilderness. There are youtube tutorial out there where you can make a inflator if blowing it is too hard for you. Full review

Sea to Summit Traveller TRI

rated 3.5 of 5 stars This is a cost effective and more than adequate light minimal coverage for a quick summer outing in the woods. It is versatile enough for couch surfing relatives over the holidays. It is just wide enough to cover two cozy campers that are not too big in girth on a not chilly summer outing. Originally bought for couch surfing relatives, but I found it useful as a comforter on a fall evening too. That opened the door to other uses. Took it out for a July 6K ft elevation overnight in Sierra Nevadas… Full review

Marmot Men's Trestles 30

rated 3 of 5 stars Gone are the days when Marmot made durable and hardcore outdoor products. Instead, we now have Marmot, the maker of average to subpar outdoor products that are at best just a step ahead of Walmart quality. The Trestles 30 is suitable for car camping and campground only outings. While I cannot say the Trestles 30 is a "bad" bag, I also can't say this is a bag that is going to do anything more than be a decent bag for car camping and front country endeavors. Like other Marmot products I have tested… Full review

Mountain Hardwear Men's Phantom 0°

rated 4 of 5 stars Great option, but maybe not the best option. Overall a great bag. I tested at a local camping store but purchased from Sunny Sports as they had the bag for $120 cheaper. I went with this for colder Colorado hikes and it holds up well down to near zero temperatures. I was between this bag and comparable options from Feathered Friends and Western Mountaineering. In the end it came down to this bag and the Western Mountaineering Antelope. This bag was heavier than the Antelope and did not have continuous… Full review
