Recent Sleeping Bag/Pad Reviews

Klymit Inertia XL Recon

rated 5 of 5 stars Very light, very compact, minimalistic sleeping pad for someone willing to try something different. Here you can watch the review. Have fun. Full review

Marmot Men's Helium

rated 5 of 5 stars Lightweight, super warm, 3-season sleeping bag. 15 degrees, super comfortable and warm 850 fill down. Best used for camping/backpacking in the fall/winter time. Definitely would recommend if you enjoy being warm and comfortable. This bag is really amazing, I've used it in the low 20s and it worked perfectly. I think the comfort rating is around 20 degrees and the lower rating is 16. I spent 10 days on my sleeping pad only in the backcountry of Moab, Utah. I was wearing layers and warm hat, and a… Full review

Ozark Trail 40F Mummy Sleeping Bag

rated 3 of 5 stars I used this bag two nights last weekend and found it was too cold on its own—lowest temp was 51 degrees each of those nights. I agree with almost everything commented by Eric. I prefer a cool sleeping environment. However, I used this bag two nights last weekend and found it was too cold on its own—lowest temp was 51 degrees each of those nights. I was in a large tent (admittedly, a smaller tent would have been better) with one other person. I had to add a fleece sleeping bag for more insulation. Full review

The Instaflator

rated 4 of 5 stars Simple, easy to use, human powered tool for filling sleep pads or other inflatable gear. Packs light and small, no batteries required. Would probably work to inflate a pack raft, but definitely a great way to save some breath when making camp at the end of the day. My first reaction when someone here on Trailspace posted a link to The Instaflator was to laugh. Then I got to thinking about the advantages of not having to blow up my sleep pad manually and the idea didn't seem so silly. I ordered two… Full review

REI Lite-Core Sit Pad

rated 4.5 of 5 stars If you don't want to carry a chair and you still appreciate relief from the hard ground around your campsites then you might want to consider adding the REI Lite-Core 4 ounce multi use item to your pack. It serves me as a sit pad, semi-frame for my frameless back pack, cold weather chair insulation and insulation under my calves and feet for sleeping in my hammock. I find the REI Lite-Core sit pad a very valuable, durable, and multi-functional piece of gear. It is the first thing that goes in my… Full review

Western Mountaineering MegaLite

rated 5 of 5 stars Warm and comfy to 30°, survival rating to much lower. I thru hiked the AT with this bag, starting in April and ending in October. I saw snow, ice, hail, frost, to temperatures of 110°. When it was cold I only recall being chilly once, and it was getting caught at high altitude in the Smokies in a storm. When it was hot the bag was used as a pillow or pad top, but even in the hot humid Appalachian summers it gets chilly sometimes in those hollows and sometimes I would zip it up in summer. The only… Full review

Marmot Never Summer

rated 3 of 5 stars Good budget down bag. 650 fill down is just as warm as the lighter stuff but heavier. Fits true to size, normal is for 6'0'' and shorter. Has cold spots in the foot box. I've had this bag for years. It is my first winter bag. The particular one I own is the orange and rust one with the black inside, not the newer all orange or all red bag. My biggest gripe is not that this is not ultralight, it is what it is and you get what you pay for.  My biggest con for this bag is that the foot box is so narrow… Full review

The North Face Inferno -40F/-40C

rated 5 of 5 stars Excellent choice for winter camping, very packable for its size and true to its warmth. Have used it in a lean-to with no tent in miserable conditions and was quite comfortable. I have not slept out in -40° temperatures yet, but it was excellent at -20°. Closed up enough around the face to not freeze, actually ended up taking off my hat halfway through the night! A bit long for me, I'm 5 foot six, but I put extra clothes at the bottom. Easy to get in and out unless you are wearing lots of layers,… Full review

Hennessy Hammock SuperShelter Insulation System

rated 3.5 of 5 stars If you own a Hennessy hammock, and want to camp in the cold you might want to check out Hennessy Hammock's Super Shelter (HHSS) an economical solution to keeping the hammock side of the hammocker warm. The HHSS is rated to be a 4-season solution to insulate the hammock. I have used it with success down to 25° and was toasty warm. The Hennessy Hammock Super Shelter is a system approach to hammock bottom insulation, and a good one that with the use of a vapor barrier users can camp out in frigid… Full review
