Recent Sleeping Bag/Pad Reviews

Enlightened Equipment Revelation

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Versatile, well made, warm and light. Comfortable in the desert and in the High Sierra. This quilt delivers—great for long distance backpackers/bike touring. Overall I loved this bag-alternative. I was very concerned with 1) lowering the base weight of my pack and 2) staying warm at night. These bags are custom made, so here are my specs: Down Fill: 950, Down Treatment: DownTek Water-Repellent Down Temperature: 10°F (-12°C) Length: Regular - 6', Width: Regular - 54" Warmth - It's warm! (I am… Full review

Mountain Hardwear Spectre SL 20°

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Warm, light, packs small, feels small, and is noisy. it is a nice bag for 3+ season use. Likely due to the laminate, it gets damp in below freezing weather; using a vapor barrier liner takes care of the problem. I find that it is very confining in the shoulder area when fully zipped. The sleeping bag makes a lot of noise when shifting around or rolling over. I can't speak to its durability since I have only used it for no more than 20 nights in my five years of ownership. Enlightened Equipment Revelation

rated 5 of 5 stars Lightweight, affordable comfort for the UL backpacking dude or dudette! Reaffirming what has been said before. The Revelation is a great lightweight quilt for three-season backpacking. This 20-degree version is warm enough for summer cooler temperature at altitude. I don't mess with the supplied straps and I like how small this packs down. For the price, I believe it's a good value for three-season overnights. Used it for eight nights to section hike the JMT in Yosemite.  Full review

Marmot NanoWave 35

rated 3 of 5 stars Well built. Great for summer nights but not for cold weather. I am a Florida hiker/backpacker. I am one of those people northerners laugh at because I wear winter jackets when the weather reaches 65°F and below. Knowing my blood is thinner and I have my own internal insulation (weighing in at 150 lbs), I was hoping this bag would keep me warm. Although this bag is rated to 35°F, I was cooly uncomfortable at 52°F and below. On all occasions where the weather dipped below 55°, I packed wool pajamas,… Full review

Western Mountaineering Puma GWS

rated 5 of 5 stars The Puma GWS lives up to the ratings and is high quality. The zipper works flawlessly and the cinch cord is easy to use. I slept out in -5 degrees with 25mph winds in a single person tent, warm all over. Remember a sleeping bag is only as good as its sleeping pad. In the winter you will get cold with any sleeping bag if you use a cheap sleeping pad. Full review

Klymit Static V Luxe

rated 4.5 of 5 stars I'm hooked...they got me. They got me....hook line and sinker! So, many of you read and rated my review of the standard Static V.  I saw this and couldn't resist the temptation. I bought into the Luxe version because it has all the same functional features of the standard—but with more size and loft.  Common points—The V baffled design really DOES help retain body heat. The fabric is durable and has never failed me. The twin valves on this pad are identical to the single, durable push-pull… Full review

The North Face Snowshoe 3D

rated 2 of 5 stars This bag was rated at zero degrees. The fill is inadequate and to top it off there is no draft collar. I would rate it as lame 40-degree bag. Full review

Sierra Designs DriDown Pillow

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Seeking a little more luxury and comfort in the backcountry? At around USD $25, the Sierra Designs DriDown pillow is a comfortable, reasonably priced, well-designed, and responsibly sourced down pillow for backcountry use. The flexible design of this pillow system allows one to shed weight or add luxury as desired. The Sierra Designs DriDown Pillow is actually a pillow "system" consisting of a DriDown-filled, quilted pillow top, a synthetic pillow, and a lightweight stuff sack. I use the term system… Full review

Coleman Rest Easy Pad

rated 4 of 5 stars Not as bad as some reviews make it out to be. Just bought a Coleman Easy-Rest blue foam pad. It was $4 at Runnings, when I went back a couple weeks later to get it, it was $9.99. It measures at 71.5"x24"x3/8", 11.5 oz. without packaging (claimed wt. of 8 oz.). Tried it on a very cold concrete garage floor (18°F). It has noticeable R-value (more than expected :-), and no real hard spots, even on my side, I'm 180 lbs. It rolls down to 5 3/4" diameter (non compressed). It cuts 2 lbs off of my current self-inflating… Full review
