Recent Sleeping Bag/Pad Reviews

The North Face Dark Star -40

rated 3 of 5 stars Warm. This is a warm bag. It was used on a 5-day trip to Ontario in temps that hovered in the upper negative teens F. When I did not roll off my pads, the bag kept me extremely warm. When not on the pads, it still kept me comfortably warm, but with a slight chill. Not at all uncomfortable. This bag is also quick to dry in the morning. These are the only positives in my opinion. The zipper is unbelievably difficult to pull closed the last 6 remaining inches. The draft tube comes loose easily… Full review

Sea to Summit Aeros Ultralight Pillow

rated 5 of 5 stars Inflatable camping pillow. Small, light, compact. Didn't realize how much I needed this thing until after I'd bought it.  Full review

Wiggy's Hunter Super Lt

rated 5 of 5 stars Very well constructed and warm! I purchased the Hunter Super Lt with hood rectangular, the ftrss system. I highly recommend this bag. I use it for base camps. I have not used the outer bag for hiking, but might since it is light. I recommend this product for anyone who wants a quality sleeping bag made in the USA that will last a lifetime. Customer service was fantastic. The web site spells out the return policy. The invoice also spells out the return policy — no issues at all. Answered all my… Full review

ALPS Mountaineering Unisex Desert Pine 20

rated 4.5 of 5 stars A solid and affordable starter bag that performs ably. Full disclosure: I've had mine for closing on five years now. Take this review both as a testament to its performance and durability. Keep in mind that the model of bag may have changed for the better or worse since I bought mine. ALPS products are, overall, pretty solid offerings in the entry to mid-grade market. They're not as light, compact, or elegant as some of the competition with fancy brand names. They are, however, performing, durable,… Full review

ALPS Mountaineering Echo Lake -20

rated 3 of 5 stars A very warm and comfortable sleeping bag. While the Echo Lake -20 does the job, there are some things that could have been done better. I bought the ALPS Mountaineering Echo Lake -20 sleeping bag in October for dead-of-winter camping. Unfortunately we've had a very mild winter so far, and it wasn't until this past week that we've seen subzero temps. There's no sense in testing equipment if you're not going to approach or push the envelope, right? This past Monday and Wednesday nights were forecast… Full review

Sea to Summit Aeros Ultralight Pillow

rated 0.5 of 5 stars Waste of money. This pillow is quite comfortable, too bad it doesn't last. I've gone through three of them in a couple of months. I've spoken with the company on several occasions and, like many gear companies, they feed me bull. That's OK though, I just won't do business with them. Don't get me wrong, they will "make it right," but when they tell me that they have less than 1% failure rate I call "bull." When I did finally do that, the PR guy finally shut up and let me talk. I explained to him… Full review

Sea to Summit Reactor Extreme Thermolite Liner

rated 4 of 5 stars Provides a 7-9° F increase inside the bag. For the size and weight, I would recommend it as a comfort item, if you can fit it into your budget. I was very skeptical about the +25 degrees claim of the Thermolite Reactor Extreme so, I set up this little experiment to see just how well the liner worked. Because sleeping comfort is such a personal thing, I will try and provide as much information here as possible so that you can make your own informed decision. I used a sleeping bag rated at the current… Full review

Big Agnes Lost Ranger 15°

rated 5 of 5 stars This is indeed a 15° sleeping bag when used with an appropriate R-Value pad.   I have read a lot of very favorable and very negative reviews on the Big Agnes Lost Ranger with very little in-between. I found it odd that a piece of equipment would be judged at such extremes, so I decided to pick one up and see what all the hype was about. To try and remove the heavy bias that this item seems to draw, I set up this little experiment to see just how this bag worked. Because sleeping comfort is such… Full review

Western Mountaineering Apache MF

rated 5 of 5 stars This bag is amazing! I just spent New Years, Jan 1, 2015, in the Utah desert. It got down to 12°F in my Springbar. This bag didn't just keep me not cold, but with the draft collar and the hood all the way cinched I stayed toasty warm. This bag will definitely put any other three-season bag to shame. I spent four nights in this bag in the Utah desert on New Year's Eve in freezing cold temperatures and stayed completely and totally warm at night in the sleeping bag. The draft collar works amazing… Full review
