Recent Sleeping Bag/Pad Reviews

Patagonia Hybrid Sleeping Bag

rated 4 of 5 stars The Patagonia Hybrid Sleeping Bag is an “elephant foot” style bag designed to minimize the weight a climber carries by insulating only the bottom half of the bag and relying on insulation already required (a jacket) to keep the torso warm. The combination of high lofting 850 fill traceable down, impressively constructed baffles/footbox and 1.2-oz 15-denier 100% nylon ripstop upper (the same fabric as their famous Houdini wind shell) makes for an incredibly packable and warm nights sleep. This… Full review

Klymit Insulated Hammock V

rated 3 of 5 stars What works on the ground does not necessarily work in a hammock. Unfortunately, Klymit's attempt at a hammock pad proves this point. The Insulated Hammock V Pad is a comfortable inflatable pad that will have some appeal to front country hammock hangers in mild-to-warm weather conditions. But a vastly overstated R-value is the primary takeaway from nine nights of March-April testing. Testing Parameters: The Insulated Hammock V Pad was tested nine nights in March and April 2017. Three nights were… Full review

Klymit Insulated Static V Luxe

rated 3 of 5 stars The Insulated Static V Luxe is comfortable, but falls into a category somewhere between car camping and backpacking. A number of my friends bought the Static V pads after comparing price with R-value and quality based on reviews. After hearing quite a few points of positive feedback, I was pleased to receive the Insulated Static V Luxe as a gift during the holidays.  I've used the Insulated Static V Luxe for about 1.5 years now and thought it might be time to give some feedback based on my experiences… Full review

Little Shop of Hammocks Toaster Down Under Quilt

rated 5 of 5 stars A full length 800 FP HyperDri goose down hammock under quilt rated for 0 F. Available in a large variety of colour combinations and fabric types, I choose the A90 (.9 oz/sq yrd.) olive outside with the same A90 fabric in black on the inside. After testing it out a few nights this winter it is more than capable of taking you down to the 0 degree point. I remained toasty and warm well past freezing on a couple nights. Over stuff of the down is available for those venturing out in sub 0 temps. Very… Full review

Kelty Cosmic 4

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The Kelty Cosmic 4 is a great sleeping bag that's snug even on cold winter nights. It's puffy. It's comfortable at 19 degrees Fahrenheit and up. I'd recommend it if you want a warm cozy night. The Kelty Cosmic 4 is a very warm 4-degree bag that's comfortable at 19 degrees. It is 6 feet long, has lots of hood room, and plenty of foot room for me. So overall it is very comfortable. The bag is easy to get in and out of since it has a wide hood (as long as it is tightened). The bag doesn't let in moisture… Full review

Klymit Inertia X-Lite

rated 4.5 of 5 stars I've used this for two backpacking seasons and it lives up to its claim—lightweight while providing comfortable sleeping conditions. Edited to 4.5 stars because the optional air-pump broke after only a few uses. The pad can still be used without the pump so I didn't attempt to contact the company for a refund/replacement. This packs smaller than a can of soda, and it weighs less (7.9 oz with the pump attachment I don't use anymore). I still keep this pad for solo trips when weight can't be distributed… Full review

Marmot Angel Fire

rated 5 of 5 stars I've owned the Marmot Angel Fire bag since 2004/5(?) and it has been my primary bag. Excellent compression, durable exterior, no defects/issues for over 12 years with an average of 8+ trips a year. Pros: lightweight, small pack size. Cons: mummy style can be difficult to sleep comfortably in as a side sleeper, but this is user preference. The only reason I didn't repurchase this bag is that my personal dimensions have changed over the last couple of years and the mummy bag style just isn't as fitting… Full review

Deuter DreamLite 500

rated 5 of 5 stars Sweet, durable, comfortable, holds up to its ratings very well. If you don't have one, prioritize getting your Dreamlite. I truly love mine. For the guy with the cord issue, I thought the exact thing. Even considered sliding barrel lock up to perfecto tying a knot and cutting the extra off. But on one trip someone took my backpack. Luckily all my gear and sacks were in the tent with me. Man, figuring out how to lug my gear back out the trail without my backpack was a lot of trial by error and I… Full review

Sierra Designs Frontcountry Bed 600 SYN 2-Season

rated 5 of 5 stars My go-to for any trip where weight isn't the largest concern. I've been a mummy bag user for decades but it was time for a change. I use this mostly on weekend trips, car camping, and disaster response. I've spent about 100 nights in this bag and there is virtually no wear at all. Most of these nights are on a Red Cross cot while deployed with Team Rubicon. Sleeping temp and comfort is extremely subjective, but I have found this comfortable without a base layer to about 40-45°. For reference I… Full review
