Recent Sleeping Bag/Pad Reviews

Alpine Design 45 Degree Micro Lite Mesa Hybrid Rec

rated 4.5 of 5 stars An inexpensive hybrid design sleeping bag that works great in warm weather. Would be a perfect lightweight option for emergency equipment in a vehicle as well as being a decent bag for summer backpacking. Being a budget backpacker, I realized that one major way I could cut weight off my base load was to find a lighter sleeping bag that would keep me comfortable. I am also a stomach sleeper (one leg bent), so a skinny bag (mummy) wasn't going to cut it for me. In reality, almost anything was going… Full review

Big Agnes Pumphouse

rated 3 of 5 stars The BA Pumphouse is too low-volume to be a good inflation device, and that property is the main feature that differentiates it from any other lightweight, waterproof, roll-top stuff sack. It does, however, have an unintended use -- it makes a good solar water heater. Although it is listed as just a stuff sack in the headline here on TS, it is really intended for use as a mattress inflater, with the suggested stuff sack and pillow as secondary uses. The bottom of sack has a little nozzle on it that… Full review

Kelty Men's SB 20

rated 5 of 5 stars I would highly reccomend this sleeping bag. It was warm, and the head and foot box will always be dry. Dri-Down is an excellent advantage over the normal down. We got the SB 20 because I was looking for a lightweight, DriDown bag. I got this one because of the extra protection Kelty puts on the bags. The head and foot boxes each have a water resistant covering to help you stay protected from any condensation that comes off of a tent.  The bag was plenty warm for me, and felt good. All the zippers… Full review

Helinox Camp Cot

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Lightweight (about 2kg) and most easy installation under 1.5 min with good design. Only the price is slightly high. I'd been looking for a light and easy cot and found two of all. They were the Helinox Cot 1 and Therm-a-Rest ultralight Cot. I gave my choice to the Helinox Cot 1 because it needs really fewer motions of setting up than the Ultralite cot and more reliabilities from their DAC pole. Full review

Therm-a-Rest Stuff Sack Pillow

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This is a nice, lightweight, and reasonably priced stuff sack/pillow that held up to some wet days and nights pretty well. I like that it is compact and lightweight and dual purpose. I was looking for a cheap stuff sack and I have liked Therm-a-Rest products before so I got this one. It works well and is super lightweight, which is nice. I took it on a trip where we had a lot of wet weather and it stayed dry pretty well. I like that it's a good price too. Full review

Marmot Sawtooth

rated 5 of 5 stars Kept me warm in the teens. This bag lives up to its warmth rating. This bag is rated for 15 degrees and has held up to that. For its price, it packs down well and is relatively light at just over 3 lbs, or at least was when I bought it in 2005. There are probably lighter down bags now. I have used it in winter temperatures down to 10 degrees and been comfortable with no liner. A couple of nights my feet were cooler so I had to wear socks, but I think that was due to my older tent being a little… Full review

enLIGHTened Equipment Epiphany Cuben Fiber Quilt

rated 2.5 of 5 stars Light, small, warm, but should breathe better. I have only used this one time on a 50+ mile backpack trip. I therefore want to do some more experimenting so consider these first impressions. I really liked it on first sight as it was small and very light (and mine is a little over stuffed). The first few days were warm and I used it like a blanket (lots of side venting) and had no issues. I was glad to be carrying such a small and light quilt. When we got to higher elevations (Volgesang: I think… Full review

Mountain Hardwear Pinole 20°

rated 5 of 5 stars Great bag for the budget backpacker. Compresses well for a 20deg synthetic, and keeps me warm down to rated temp! My son and I needed a couple of packable, cold weather bags for backpacking with his Scout Troop.  Considering budgeting for outfitting us both with packs, bags, sleeping pads, and miscellaneous gear, we were looking at less expensive bags. Throw in that we're in the Southeast, where humidity and rain are always in the possibilities, down bags didn't make sense, either. I put some research… Full review

Therm-a-Rest Z-Seat

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Great little seat for when out hiking. Works perfectly. I purchased the Therm-a-Rest Z-Seat in Limon/Silver after seeing my friend had one on a winter hike. When everyone stopped to have lunch and we were all looking for a dry place to sit down he just took this out and sat on the nearest rock.   The material is designed to insulate you from the cold wet ground and it does that well. The silver side radiates your body heat back up which helps keep you warmer and the material keeps the snow and… Full review
