I slept outside a few nights ago in 20 degree temps and freezing rain, condensation was somewhat of a problem, but I'd be dead without the bivy, no joke. It handles wind gusts like a champ, and unless you have a great 4 season tent, I wouldn't mess around with a 3 season, just get the bivy.
