Recent Stove/Cookware Reviews

Campingaz Turbo 270

rated 2.5 of 5 stars Good stove. Cartridge unavailable. Great stove, but the cartridges for it are no longer available in the US and not sure about Europe. Full review

MSR PocketRocket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars If you're still using your WhisperLite for three-season solo or two-person backpacking, you need to upgrade to a good canister stove. The MSR PocketRocket is the gold standard and for good reason. It is lightweight, folds up and fits into a compact plastic case, is simple to use, and puts out all the heat you need for heating water for meals. To get the most out of a canister stove, you need to understand what it's good for and what it's not so good for. If you don't expect it to melt snow for you… Full review

Jetboil Flash Cooking System

rated 4 of 5 stars I love the weight and speed of this cook system. Every time I go backpacking with friends I end up boiling water for everyone. I can boil a cup of water by the time they are finally set up and ready to start cooking. Setup is a breeze. I love the self igniter which works every time. I wish you had better control on the flame. It tends to scorch if simmered too long. One can of fuel will allow me approximately 10 meals. This system packs up inside itself and is very light weight. I haven't had any… Full review

Texsport Stainless Steel 2-Person Cook Set

rated 5 of 5 stars Great first set! This set for the money can not be beat. The copper bottom evenly distributes the heat and it is tough. I take river sand and scrub it out and it shines like new. It is lightweight and my stove fits inside the cup nested all together in a stuff sack. Love it. I lost mine a few years ago to a thief and searched till I found a new set again. If you love cooking at home you will feel right at home using this product in the woods. I backpack with it and kayak camp with it all the time. Full review

MSR Alpine Folding Spatula

rated 4.5 of 5 stars Light and reliable, this folding spatula works well for flipping eggs and pancakes and can also be used to stir soups and fluids. For reasons of weight and time, I tend to rule out eggs and pancakes on longer trips, but on leisurely weekenders it can be nice to cook up some fresh yellow-eyes or a batch of cakes. That's when I bring along the MSR folding spatula. I've had it for at least five years now, and often just throw it in to a general purpose cooking kit when I'm not too worried about weight. MSR WindPro

rated 4.5 of 5 stars This is the most stable and easily operated stove I have used. While limited to summer use, it puts out plenty of heat and seems bullet proof. I have used both white gas stoves and canister stoves and this baby is the best. It is a beautiful work of engineering where attention to actual field use was seriously considered.   There are a lot of canister stoves that just screw directly to the top of a gas can. This design causes the cooking platform to be elevated and if the canister is of the smaller… Full review

LokSak aLokSak

rated 3 of 5 stars Heavy duty waterproof plastic storage bag designed for carrying items you want to ensure do not get exposed to the elements (rain, dust, snow, humidity, sand, etc.). This write up is a complement to the LOKSAK OPSAK write up I've also provided. I originally bought these aLOKSAKs thinking they'd work for my food storage, but the food odors were coming through so I ended up going back and getting the OPSAK for that purpose. For my 3.5-day backpacking trip, I used these aLOKSAKs for carrying the items… Full review

LokSak OPSAK

rated 4 of 5 stars Heavier duty plastic storage bag designed to block odors. Can be used for food storage, trash hauling and dirty clothes. A lighter weight option for backpacking when you're more concerned about critters getting into your food than bears. In mid-July I was joining a buddy of mine for a few days during his through hike of the Colorado Trail. When I met up with him prior to the trip he showed me these OPSAKs he had for food storage. They claimed to block food odors and from what we'd read regarding… Full review

MSR Alpine Folding Spoon

rated 3 of 5 stars Nice idea, but too flexible for stirring big pots full of thick oatmeal or one-pot stews. Maybe better when cooking smaller amounts for 2-4 people. Recommended, but with some reservations. It's nice to have a big spoon when cooking for more than a few people, but this one doesn't make the grade. I had one of the original ones, which had a locking mechanism similar to MSR's Folding Spatula, but the lock broke while scraping out a pot, so I bought the new version.  I've had the new one for a few… Full review
