Recent Synthetic Insulated Jacket Reviews

Outdoor Research Women's Deviator Hoody

rated 4 of 5 stars Versatile jacket perfect for high energy activities. Polartec Alpha insulation in the front of the jacket and waffle grid fleece used for the sleeves, hood, and back. I will admit that it was lust at first sight for me and this jacket. The contrast between the rip-stop nylon on the front of the jacket and the waffle knit fleece on the sleeves was really sharp and the reviews were all favorable. My first impression was that it was incredibly light. My second impression was quickly realized when I… Full review

The North Face Thermoball Pullover

rated 4.5 of 5 stars The usual excellent quality and spendy retail pricing from The North Face. Excellent addition to my cool/cold weather wardrobe, but only because I got it on a close-out deal (not a 2nd). This pullover retailed for more than I wanted to spend, but the reviews, coupled with an excellent deal I found elsewhere convinced me to order. I have been wearing it a few weeks and it's been very good, though not great. I give it 4.5 stars based primarily on cost to performance. For a synthetic, it is very lightweight… Full review

Buffalo Mountain Shirt

rated 4.5 of 5 stars A reliable, fast drying synthetic jacket which puts a lot of emphasis on staying warm through a high level of breathability. The Buffalo Mountain Shirt is an excellent choice of clothing for anyone who wants an extremely breathable and affordable coat for use while active. I have had this coat for a year and a half now, and while I mainly use it in winter due to the fact that it's usually too warm for summer use, its low weight of 630g allows it to act as a nice backup when wildcamping or backpacking… Full review

Patagonia Men's Nano Puff Pullover

rated 5 of 5 stars The Patagonia Nano Puff Pullover is a versatile, lightweight insulating layer that also does a pretty good job of keeping the wind chill down. When I learned that I had won a gift certificate from Trailspace, my first thought was that I wanted to finally get a modern, purpose-designed, technical piece of clothing to help lighten my load overall. After looking through (and researching) all the lovely clothing items on like a kid memorizing every page of the Sears Christmas… Full review

Icebreaker Men's MerinoLOFT Helix Zip Hood

rated 3 of 5 stars A jacket that will keep you warm as long as you keep active, and is not meant for idle time spent in camp. Ideal for daytime winter activity. Best used as an insulating mid layer to supplement water and wind-shedding outerwear, or as a standalone outer layer in milder (“shoulder season”) dry conditions. Sizing up is recommended for users wanting to layer pieces beneath this jacket without compromising their range of mobility. The simple design is well made but under thought, with an ill-fitting… Full review

Columbia Women's Diamond 890 TurboDown Jacket

rated 1.5 of 5 stars Dark feathers are visible, look like dirty spots. Called Columbia, they said this is not defect so no return. Don't recommend. Full review

Sherpa Adventure Gear Shankar Belay Jacket

rated 5 of 5 stars Super light, super warm, super awesome. I'm 5'7" 140 lbs. Small is a snug fit, medium leaves me room to layer in super cold weather. I've had this for two winters now. I wear this jacket every day in the bitter Canadian cold. Man, I'm laughing at everybody else in those bulky/expensive Canada Goose jackets. I'm thoroughly impressed with the Primaloft insulation, pound/pound it is the warmest jacket I own.  Thunder Bay, Ontario, is really cold in the winter, with my Patagonia R3 sweater (300wt fleece)… Full review

Arc'teryx Men's Atom LT Hoody

rated 4 of 5 stars Not the warmest jacket, but breathable, weather resistant, light, and comfortable. The fit is a little on the small side, but this would suit a climber who wants as little baggy material around a harness as possible. Otherwise you might want to size up. I went for a large and it's spot on for me (5'11", 38" chest). Unlike some belay style jackets the hood is adjustable with a cinch cord at the back. However, this is not a belay on. Weather resistance is very good for a non-waterproof… Full review
