If you're looking for the ultimate coat for winter, look no further. The beauty of The North Face Vortex Acclimate Jacket is that it's incredibly warm and equally verstile.I live in Tennessee and if you live here you know that you can go to bed with the temperature a balmy 65 degrees and wake up scraping ice off your windshield. Thus a jacket that can provide in a varity of conditions is paramount.
It's advertised as a three-in-one coat and it really is.
(Jacket # 1) You can zip out the inside liner and wear it as a light wind breaker.
(Jacket #2) You can wear the shell without the liner and it's fine. Not to warm, not too cold. Great jacket if it's raining or a tad cold.
(Jacket #3) Of course you can incorperate both the liner and the shell to make an impenetrable barrier to old man winter.
I should note that I've had some zip-in jackets that require an engineering degree to operate. Not so with the Vortex Acclimate. Very easy to zip in and out.
If you're a skier like I am you're going to love this jacket. Just got back from Vermont (Killington) and this jacket was a freaking lifesaver. Plenty of pockets for trail maps, wallet, Ipod, lift tickets, etc. I think I'm still finding pockets on this thing.
Snow getting inside the coat is not a problem as the powder skirt provides adequate protection, especially when paired with North Face ski pants.
I hope this doesn't sound like a North Face commercial but this jacket is awesome.
This jacket is pretty hard to find and I had to special order it from a local ski store here in Nashville but if you can find it get it. It'll be the best winter coat you've ever had.

Fabric: Do not know
Fill: Gore-tex lined
Price Paid: $120
I bought this jacket off the closeout rack of a neighborhood camping/outdoor store. My wife actually spotted it and insisted I try it on. Because we do a lot of outdoor sports and walking we are always on the lookout for decently made gear.
The jacket fits very well and feels light. After using it for awhile now, it is durable, and cleans well. It is also very warm. The outer layer is not the typical outer layer you find on many Gore-tex jackets. Whatever nylon is used, I like it. It has held up much better than the three Gore-tex parka jackets the Army has issued me.
The jacket can be divided into just an outside wind breaker, or just a soft shell jacket or both adapting to all seasons and environments. The back bottom of the jacket extends down further to keep your butt warm and out of the inclement weather. It has pockets galore. This is a very versatile and tuff jacket for a wide varety of weather.

Just got this tonight after wanting a new winter coat for the past five years. I looked at many, including the Columbia Titanium. This was better because of the lining and pockets.
I have yet to use it of course, but I tested the waterproofness and nothing got in. Other reviews say the lining is warm and it is very comfortable. Have it on now inside and it is getting hot!
I am going to wear the shell in Liverpool, England, and really test if it is waterproof. I am not an expert and may not get a chance to use it for skiing, but as far as a good winter coat goes, this looks good for someone like me, a professor. Lots of versatility.
So far, I am very pleased with the craftsmanship, the pockets and reasonable price.
