TrekSta Assault GTX
Source: bought it new
Price Paid: $105
Good snug fit for ascending or descending. They are not comfortable like a running shoe, but not unformfortable either. Very good stability running down rocky/boulder strewn trails. Sheds moisture / snow. Great for hikes of varying temperature; so far 15°F to 60°F. Good grip on snow or rock.
I recommend them.
- Keep feet dry
- Grip well on rock and snow
- Conform to feet—helpful for long descents.
- Too early to tell. Only about 20 miles on them.
Boots fit snug but do not cause pressure points that hurt...at least not after sub-10 mile hikes. Laces work well and do not slip. They definitely form to your foot. They almost feel like a "minimalist" boot, but are very supportive for their weight.
Very good support and light weight. I broke them in with a couple easy walks. Back of my right heal was sore after 6 miles but not painful or blistered. I do not like heavy boots or boots with a toe box that allows slipping which seems to make turning an ankle more likely. These are bizzare in a sense; they conform like socks but support like boots.
I wore them on a winter hike in NH with a 50 pound pack in early April (down to 10°F and 50mph wind) and hiked the same trail sans snow in late May with a VERY light pack. Despite the fact it is not a winter boot, in cold weather it was fine as long as I continued moving. Trekstas kept my feet dry both trips.
Traction in corn snow, packed snow and dry rocks was quite good. I slow down when wet rock or ice was under foot.
I have hiked with workboots until the soles fell off. Each trip over the past 4 years I vowed never to wear my work boots again... that went on for hundreds of miles. Hope these hold up as well. They are MUCH lighter than work boots and grip well.
I did find they ran large and purchased a half size under my normal. I tried on a LOT of boots over the last year.
So far these are great.
