Me: 190 lbs, 6', size 11 US

I have probably worn my Vasque Kotas at least twice a week for the last 3 years. Including rain, snow, mountains, hills, wet, dry, etc. I've never had anything I would complain about in this shoe. They have fairly good traction, even more so than my Asolo backpacking boots.

The only reason I am finally replacing them with another Vasque product is the tread is starting to smooth out from living in a concrete jungle. However, they will still be in my closet for a quick trail hike or fishing shoe. Honestly these have been great and are still very comfortable.

Why only 4.5? Part of the front toe guard came unglued after about 2 years and who knows how many miles. A little glue and they were fixed. They also have a 2 inch piece of string that is coming out on the right side of my right shoe. I think that any of these items can be attributed to how hard I am on footwear and should not be the deciding factor in not getting them.

I would not hesitate to recommend them and I love the red.

These shoes feel good but unfortunately the soles have fallen apart.

I have worn them on 2 trips up and down Mt. San Jacinto (11 miles each) and 1 trip up and down Mt. Whitney (day-hiking camelback only, no weight).

So with under 50 miles total of non weight bearing hiking, on fairly good trails, the soles have come apart.

This is unfortunate because I liked them but I would not purchase them again.

Here's what other sites are saying:

Vasque Kota, a multisport shoe meets day hiker, joins a sturdy platform, ample cushioning and smooth pliability for true outdoor performance. Combination nubuck and pig suede leather uppers supply durability, flexibility and breathable comfort on all-day adventures. Padded cuffs and tongues provide comfort on the go; rubber toe bumpers protect feet and uppers from bumps and abrasion. Keystone Control System incorporates nylon webbing supports to help lock feet into heel pockets and footbeds when laced snug. Quick-drying nylon linings disperse excess moisture buildup. Velocity last shape, with curved toe boxes, is ideal for a foot's natural shape; low-profile ride improves stability. Removable dual-density footbeds add cushioning to compression-molded EVA midsoles for all-day cushioning and shock absorption. Thermoplastic urethane plates protect feet from sharp rocks and uneven terrain while creating additional rigidity for stability. Vasque Racer X rubber outsoles bite into both loose and packed surfaces for reliable traction.

When you can't decide between a trail running shoe or a light hiker, the Vasque Kota Men's Hiking Shoe brings you the best of both with solid support and performance. Thanks to its burly Racer X sole and a nubuck and suede leather upper, the Kota gives you the support and durability you need for long day on the trail. A dual-density EVA midsole provides excellent support and cushion when you're running on rough terrain with a lot of gear in your pack. The Kota also uses Vasque's Keystone Control System to anchor your foot solidly to the sole so you take full advantage of the Kota Hiking Shoe's exceptional traction and padding.

So you're scouring, looking for a pair of shoes that's capable of going the distance with you and your multi-sport interests? Look no further. The Vasque Men's Kota Day Hiker finds the sweet spot that many hiking shoes miss. It has just enough rugged stability for putting in big miles with plenty of vertical while at the same time provides the right amount of nimbleness for the occasional trail run. For protection from rocks, brush, and a snow patch here and there, the upper consists of 1.8mm waterproof nubuck and pig suede leather. At first glance the Vasque Kota Day Hiker's laces look like the usual, but an innovative Keystone Control System increases their sphere of influence by connecting with dual bands of thin webbing on either side of the instep to do a better job of creating snug stability in the midfoot region than most other shoes. Separating your foot from the trail, an integrated sandwich of components gives your foot a cushioned, comfortable ride. A key to the Vasque Racer X outsole's great traction is a series of short, oval shaped cleats that dig into soft surfaces ranging from grass to snow. Between these cleats, forward and back angled, crescent shaped lugs help maintain traction on steep ascents and descents. Other key underfoot components include a removable, dual density EVA footbed, a compression molded EVA midsole, and a Molded thermoplastic urethane (TPU) plate with heel stabilizer. This plate is a key to the Vasque Kota's cushioned yet stable ride. It incorporates a twist resistant platform into the integrated sole system without compromising forefoot flex.
