Katadyn Base Camp

rated 1.5 of 5 stars We used the filter on a BWCA trip and even with prefiltering the water with 4 bandanas and using 3 screen prefilters from older filter cartridges the unit clogged in just 20L of use. The only thing that saved us from boiling water was the reason I bought the system; the filter works in my Hiker pump. We did find that the filter worked fine in the pump. My plan is to put a Sawyer in-line filter on the bag.   I like the large volume and ease of use.  I just want something I can back flush and repair. … Full review

Katadyn Hiker PRO

rated 4 of 5 stars Used on several 50 mile+ multi-day kayak float trips pumping ~8 L/day of water (maybe 80 - 90 L total to date). Light and easy to carry and quick setup. Can tell the filter is starting to clog as water flow was not continuous with last day's pump. But still a good unit for the cost and function. Using this system after a much larger system failed on day two of a four-day, 65-mile float. This system has been on two trips to date and has worked well. Easy to set up and pump. It does take two people… Full review

Katadyn Base Camp

rated 3.5 of 5 stars If your Base Camp leaks, just wrap some plumbers (silicone) tape around the threads before screwing on the cap. In a pinch use a piece of a plastic grocery bag (they are almost as thin now). Works great, no leaks. I would like to get a replacement ceramic filter for mine. Anyone have a reasonably priced source for one? No way to tell if the filter is still usable. Filter clogs even with clear water. Needs a ceramic filter. Easy to use.  Would like to see replacement ceramic filter at reasonable… Full review

Katadyn Hiker PRO

rated 4 of 5 stars If you need to carry a filter for reasonably large volumes of water (camping for several people), this filer works quite well. Lighter options exist now. I've used this filter for several years, but now rarely carry it because I can generally meet my needs (just my wife and I) with a Sawyer Squeeze for a lot lower weight penalty. Full review

Katadyn Hiker PRO

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Good water filtration system. I have used this filter for several years now, and have replaced the cartridges about 2 times in the past 5 years.  The system is easy to use and cleans just as easy. Replacement cartridges are easy to take out and place back in.  I would recommend that when you return home from any trip that you air dry out the cartridge so that it doesn't get any mildew or mold on it. This is coming from my own experience, as I forgot to do that at the end of one season and after… Full review

Katadyn Base Camp

rated 2 of 5 stars After two weekend backpacking trips, I really liked this bag/filter. My buddy and I would fill it the day we got there, and it'd provide water for us both for the entire weekend. However, on the third trip it leaked where the filter goes into the bag. I returned it and got a new one and the new one never worked. I took this bag on two trips and both trips ended with the same result, using my buddy's water pump. Thankfully he brought his pump or we would have had no water.   I followed all of the… Full review

Platypus GravityWorks Filter System

rated 5 of 5 stars Simple, quick, reliable, light, easy to use, easy to store. I will not replace this any time soon. I switched from an MSR Sweetwater two years ago and I love this Platy Gravityworks. I won't switch any time soon. It's very fast—scoop up some water in the dirty bag, hook up the hoses and clean bag, hang it on tree and go set up your tent or do whatever. It's done in a couple minutes. It's easy to clean, easy to store, no pumping. It's much better than the pump systems It can clog with sediment… Full review

MSR MiniWorks EX

rated 5 of 5 stars This filter works great and is very easy to use. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a simple backwoods water filter. This filter has two parts. There is a foam filter at the end of the water intake tube. This foam removes large sediment and prevents debris from entering the filter system. It works well, but it's still a good idea to ensure that the water intake is not sitting in muck or surrounded by debris. The second part of this filter is the ceramic element (the part that actually… Full review

Katadyn Vario Microfilter

rated 4 of 5 stars An excellent compromise between performance, cost and weight, the Vario performs in a variety of different situations well. I have been very pleased with the performance of my Vario. It employs a similar glass fiber filter to the Hiker micro filter. The main advantages are the option to engage a ceramic prefilter to protect the main element. Personally I leave the ceramic filter in the 'on' position all the time. Even with the filter engaged, the flow rate is very good. Full review
