Trailspace turns 7 years old today. Happy Birthday!
Really? SEVEN years? Somehow it doesn't seem that long. Thinking back, it also brings back the memories of Zippo's accident on Shasta, now 8 years ago, which led to the large number of climbers around the country and even from other countries who gathered on Views From The Top overwhelming the old rec.climbing.useful on VFTT. That in turn led to the VFTT owners deciding to dump rcu and rbu. Thankfully, Dave and Alicia took over and created Trailspace from VFTT and have built a much better and more inclusive home for people who go into the outdoors. The forums now include gear reviews, repair, and advice; trip planning and reports; "off-topic"; and classified ads (hey, maybe I ought to sell off some of my stoves, tents, and sleeping bags!)
In case some of the more recent members have wondered about the headers on the Backcountry (rec.backcountry.useful) and Climbing (rec.climbing.useful) forums, now you know a little bit of the history.
A great seven years! Thanks to Dave, Alicia, and the moderators, from the Old Greybearded curmudgeon, who (believe it or not) actually continues to learn things from the forum posts (including some from the newbies).
Congrats Dave and Alicia! Hard to believe that I have been a member here for almost 6 years-Yikes.
I can't wait for Bill to have a garage sale-or open up a museum. I think Alan would be in line for some of that stuff.
I know I've also learned a lot from Trailspace's many backcountry gear reviewers and forum posters in the past seven eyars. It's great to have such a community to continue to learn from.
Having such a range of input and shared experiences is what makes Trailspace a great resource.
Congrats on seven years!
Wow, I must have stumble on to your site very soon after it was set up. I have enjoyed making Trailspace one of my regular stops while surfing the web.
Keep up the good work!
