The President and First Lady hike

Last Friday, Karen Russell of Ohio was hiking on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina when she happened to meet President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama out for a hike.

“It was just a little nondescript trail that I was on, and I didn't expect to find anybody there really, let alone the president,” Russell was quoted as saying in the Asheville Citizen-Times.

Russell had been hiking along for about an hour when she ran into some Secret Service men dressed in black. Then a woman came up and asked if it was OK to scan her with a metal detecting wand.

“They went through my pockets and my little waist pack and my camera, they checked to make sure it was a camera,” Russell said. “And then I probably went ten feet and I couldn't believe it. I just looked up and I said something really stupid, like ‘Are you who I think you are? You are!'”

Politics aside (please), I'm always encouraged when I hear about leaders and decision makers hiking and recreating outdoors. Hopefully those experiences will help them appreciate the value of nature and the outdoors too.

So, who's the most famous person you've met while hiking or during other outdoor activities?

I think that is great, not only that Ms Russell got to have a memorable experience,
But that the Obamas are making time to get out there and recharge.
I can't fathom how stressful their jobs are,
Everything choreographed with lots of cement and steel.

It makes me smile to think about them getting away.

That would be cool.

Of course when I first read the first paragraph of this article I was thinking to myself, surely no one believes the President & First Lady were just out there by themselves, and Mrs. Russell just happened to run into them.

So I'm glad the security detail was part of the story.

I want to know, what kind of hikers / boots does the Pres. wear?

Yes, politics aside, everyone in a high stress job needs a break, good for them.
